hey #birdcatcafe fans, updated the main site https://birdcat.cafe with some more info - removed two services that weren't working anymore (priviblur and redlib 🥀 ) and swapped out convertx with vert and made it public! i'm working with a new system that i implemented for my local homelab that pins docker shas for better reproducibility :3

as a follow up to this, i will be sunsetting #birdcatcafe's matrix server on October 31st, 2024.
please archive/download anything from the server you'd like to keep until then. apologies for those who depended on this service but like i've mentioned i don't see much use to it since i contact folks through other, easier ways.
i won't give up on matrix, mind you, but i don't feel comfortable publicly hosting a server for a service i really don't use a lot since i know it will eventually lead to something breaking and me not really being able to fix it efficiently. thanks for understanding.

in other #birdcatcafe news, I think i might sunset my #matrix server. i personally don't use it and it keeps taking up a lot of storage space and mental bandwidth to keep the homeserver.log file from eating the limited space i have on the host. additionally, i don't really like matrix due to their poor UX and even poorer encryption problems, including not being able to read messages from folks you've messaged previously and potential side-chain attacks.
what do y'all think?

good news, #birdcatcafe and #fursonadirectory fans!
i've got borg backup running on here remotely now, so it connects to my home server and is now backed up every day with my other apps here locally. this should make migrating vpses infinitely easier now if i ever need to expand. and now there's not just a local #borg backup throwing stuff into a folder that could die at any moment!
little by little, bit by bit. thanks for sticking with my little experiment :3

hey, friendly reminder for those using #birdcatcafe services; please don't do anything illegal on them because
a) i am on a shared cpu vps with no encryption so my provider can snoop the memory at any time
b) i *will* comply with law enforcement when asked because i have a bird and a fox to feed (me and my wife) and my safety goes over whatever you were tryna do lol
c) you shouldn't be using my services for those kind of endeavorsi would love to offer a *fully secure* service eventually, but i do not have that now. so don't... do stupid things on the internet on what i offer for now please

btw i've been daily driving https://search.birdcat.cafe and the performance has been fucking phenomenal. please try out #searxng, it's really good and gives you search results from #google, #duckduckgo, #bing, #wikipedia, and more. you can also disable the ones you don't want to use! it's pretty sick 😎

this is another #matrix space! after accidentally installing the wrong backend software we’re stable and running now. i promise.
i recommend checking out our channels and taking a look at servers from `bark.lgbt`, `furs.chat`, and others! you can add other matrix server channels by simply looking for spaces within that instance or the official matrix one!
chat.birdcat.cafe is an element client that will automatically connect to matrix.birdcat.cafe. you can access the matrix server using any client that is matrix compatible. registrations are open! :3
