I feel like there's probably a pocket dimension somewhere in the Astral Sea or something full of beholder poo, sorta like how bags of holding work.
Every decade or so, such "interplanar colostomy bags" overfill, split, and scatter their half-digested contents (along with magical items) across the cosmos.
