Ha, got an email back from the LA Times reporter about the mysterious house-occupied-by-a-bear-and-owner-nowhere-to-be-found. Apparently my email got lost in spam.
Will see if he comes up with any tidbits or not. (he did say the city claims to have reached the owner by phone "recently", which still begs the question how your entire house can be occupied by a bear, boarded up, and your car left rotting in the driveway, and your checks uncashed...).
(I still think the owner was eaten by the bear, ha ha. But if not, there is some kind of interesting story behind it, nonetheless).

Really, the options--relying on no family alive or who care about him--are:
1. Owner moved to a foreign country and just left all his stuff on autopay and never came back
2. Owner killed/died and no one noticed, everything on autopay, bear just happened to find house
3. Owner died, no one noticed, everything on autopay, bear smelled dead guy and ate him for food, and stayed.
4. Owner alive, incapacitated in a coma in a facility somewhere as "John Doe", but his property lives on through autopay.
5. Owner alive, moved somewhere?!?! and left his entire life, but doesn't check mail/pays bills still
