#BateCollection cont'd:
No storyline in evidence, such as the development of string instruments from Mongolian horsehead fiddle to this day.
Loving the irony of the one and only #theremin labelled "Do not touch". That's exactly how you play the thing ...Speaking of theremins, apparently Lydia Kavina is due to perform there right now, but I couldn't be bothered to go back for that, too depressing.
We used to have a #museum of sorts, small but quirky. This is just a showroom. #oxford

inspected #oxford's new #BateCollection today.
It has shrunk to a single room with not that many #MusicalInstruments on display. I probably own more instruments than you can see there without starting to pull out drawers.
Not many of the instruments are from the period they are supposedly representing.edited for typo

I got all excited seeing a leaflet of the #MuseumOfMusicHistory, but it turns out they don't actually have a museum you can visit, just a lot of stuff in storage. With the #BateCollection still closed, it would be nice to have such a #museum for #MusicalInstruments one can actually visit ... https://momh.org.uk/about-us/

#Oxford: So the Schwarzman building opens in October, but the common people will only be allowed to enter it in April. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1jz7nld658o no mention of the #BateCollection which should be in there somewhere ...

I do love the #BateCollection and have their poster on my wall, but as my own instrument collection has grown a bit in the last few years, I'm beginning to feel they don't have a vast number of instruments. They tell me 3/4 of the collection are in the current display. Their catalogue has 2698 entries, but these include lots tools and accessories, and instrument parts such as a cello spike listed near the end. So maybe 1,000 complete instruments? https://bate.web.ox.ac.uk/catalogue #oxford

#Oxford #today is the last chance to see the #BateCollection of #MusicalInstruments in its historic premises in St. Aldates, open from 2-5. And to play their #theremin or #serpent. Closed from tomorrow until they reopen in the new Schwarzman building some time in the summer. Staff told me they won't have more space there, but will use more efficient display technology, such as drawers.

... which reminds me - #Oxford's #BateCollection of #MusicalInstruments is due to move to the new Schwarzman Centre soon. As I understand it, today and next week may be the last chance to see it in its historic premises?! https://bate.web.ox.ac.uk/opening-time-and-how-find-us
