Most of the old green tea is gone, but we got our first autumn heat wave this week, so white tea it is. Silver Fox, (very) bud heavy spring Yunnan white tea from White2Tea.

Ho Yum Blind Tasting Club Tea Number 1 was a spring 2024 "yesheng baicha", or white tea from uncultivated trees, on Big Snow Mountain in Yongde, Lincang. You've probably noticed the theme of Ho Yummy BTC-08, all the teas were sourced during their trip to Lincang in Yunnan.

Silver Fox is an early spring 2024 bud only Yunnan white tea from White2Tea. While this is an exceptional example of the style, I don't love these types of teas so much as I appreciate them. In any case, they're good practice for appreciating subtle flavor characteristics in spring tea. Also refreshing to drink on a hot day.

Actually turned up this sample bag of One River Tea 2018 Shoumei Fuding white tea in a weird corner while I was cleaning in my office. I thought I had drunk all of my stock of this tea. Not sure how it got to where it was, but finding a very nice aged white tea is always a pleasure. My wife called the flavor, "grandma's closet".

2019 Arbor White from White2Tea is a sun dried Yunnan white tea made from large leaf varietals. Similar to Yunnan moonlight white tea, but unlike Yue Guang Bai, made from spring material intended for puerh production and sun dried, rather than shade dried. Well on its way to being aged white tea, good body in the soup, slight medicinal character in later steeps, and calming energy. Slight astringency when pushed.

Is there any better tea than well aged gongmei/shoumei white tea? Maybe, but I just enjoy everything about well aged white tea. This is a 2013 Fuding Shoumei that Yunnan Sourcing sold a while back. One of the first teas I ordered from them.

Yunnan 2017 Shade Dried White tea, 7g, by weight.

Mostly Chuan Zibai Sichuan white tea from White2Tea, but not enough for a full dose, so filled out with some assorted loose leaf white tea bottom of the bags blend.

Chuan Zibai white tea from White2Tea this morning. Hoping for a little cooler weather in the Bay Area today.

Chuan Zibai, "purple varietal", Sichuan produced, Fujian-style white tea on a Saturday. White2Tea, of course. (I think the cat sits on the tea mat when I am not looking.)

2017 Yunnan Shade Dried White from the White2Tea club. A misplaced summer white tea micro-batch at the factory led to the "accidental" aging of this shade dried white tea. Definitely on the savory side of white tea, this displays some character I associate more with raw puerh than white tea.

You try stuffing 6g of fluffy white tea in a 100ml gaiwan. (Chuan Zibai Sichuan white tea from White2Tea.)

Wow, White2Tea's 2021 "Blood Moon" has really furry leaves... Wait a sec, "Moon Bear", "Blood Moon"?! "Moon Bear" "white" raw puerh tea also had similar furry buds... I suspect this is similar material processed as a shade dried white. So, if you liked "Moon Bear", this might be another tea to try.

Sometimes a Yueguangbai, or "Moonlight", style yunnan white just hits the spot. 2020 Nightlife mini from White2Tea.

Looking for something else, I came across this misplaced sample of 2018 Shou Mei White tea from One River Tea. Still think it is a great white tea, (despite being slightly nibbled by the nefarious garage denizens).

"Sweet Ya Bao" pure bud white tea, Jinggu/Simao of Yunnan [Spring '21 ,YS]
Had an after-dinner treat - sweet floral #BaiCha that I love.
Funny thing about this tea - I use it to surprise people who imagine that green or white Chinese tea is something that leans towards grassy or vegetable notes.
One sip or even sniff of a YaBao infusion and they are totally bamboozled :)

2019 Milan White from White2Tea. Leaves usually used to make Mi Lan Dancong Oolong processed as a sun dried white tea. An interesting one time experiment that illustrates how much processing style influences the flavor of the finished tea. I.e., in a blind tasting it is unlikely you would identify this as tea from oolong varietals, rather as a slightly unusual white tea.

I'm going to spend what's left from "Peony Chirps" - #GuShu (100+ yo trees) #BaiCha (white tea) from Nan Nuo [Spring `21, ML], but this attempt was something different - brewing in silver and sipping from my latest purchased cup.The pros and cons of brewing in silver are about the same - teapot doesn't add (or take out) anything to the tea, being quite honest about actual liquid taste, but oftentimes you need that effect of a clay.
