"... when people talk about autism they talk as if it were a gradient, not a spectrum at all."
#CLLynch, 2019

I've been uncomfortable with the way people talk about the autistic s spectrum for ages, but couldn't put my finger on why. This one sentence absolutely nails it.
#HatTip to @dedicto for referencing the article in their bio.

Some insights and stories from Gary Numan that I've not heard before https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002js3b
“musical legend Gary Numan opens up about being autistic and how he interacts with the world differently. For Gary, music isn’t something he listens to for comfort or relaxation, writing music is a tool to cope with the world. He reflects on the intensity of his creative process and the role obsession plays in shaping both his music and his perspective, revealing how his neurodivergence is a gift, not a disorder. Alongside deeply personal stories, Gary shares a selection of music from the early days when he was obsessed with music to now being obsessed with certain songs”
Three parts:
1. the role of obsession in his music and life
2. on how he expresses his emotions
3. on being misunderstood#Numan #GaryNuman #Neurodivergent #AutisticSpectrum #Autistim #music #BBC6Music

Need to show people what the "spectrum" means in "autistic spectrum"? Show them how scientists use the term with this tool:

Being on the #AutisticSpectrum, I can totally identify with Lal. She's having a meltdown and a shutdown!

TIL that a bumper sticker like "Honk if you like pizza" is not, in fact, an invitation to show solidarity about pizza by pressing your horn button (resulting in excessively exuberant honking). Purportedly, this is an #AutisticSpectrum / #neurodivergent interpretation.
To a #neurotypical driver, so the theory goes, it is mere advice that the driver of the car with the bumper sticker will interpret the honks as merely that one likes pizza and ignore it.
Gobsmacked.

So this year, I came out as #Asexual. It wasn't a world-changing revelation, but it helped me to understand certain facts of my being. Just like learning that I am on the #AutisticSpectrum, embracing my #Queerness has helped me to understand why I am the person I am today.
The last several years have been shittastic, but this year has been the start of an upturn for me. I've moved back home, sober from alcohol for almost 9 years now, working at a #CoOp in a city I love, living with my mum who I love more than anything. I'm finally saving money, and my debt is almost completely paid off - I just owe the government for a CERB payment, and I'll have that paid off by tax season - I paid off my old credit card debt this year, finally.
I have to admit, I am not very hopeful for the future, for the world at large. There's so much awful shit going on. Sometimes I think it's hopeless.
But I gotta keep going. Otherwise, what else is there?
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, and that your new year is glorious.
❤️🌈 :blobcatace:

A nice illustration of the difficulties of being on the #AutisticSpectrum !
