Charcoal burning in The Delta, Attenborough Nature Reserve, April 2007.

We lit the kiln at sunrise to ensure the burn was completed in daylight. Here the kiln is shown a few minutes afterwards, with smoke rising above the glade.

The Delta was originally formed from tailings from gravel washing. Eventually it became a dry Alder carr woodland (NVC W6), Alder felled in coppice panels is the fuel.

A couple of (nearly 19 year) old digiscoped pictures of Bittern. Vignetting because camera's sensor was too big. First you see him/her, then you don't (at least if you don't look carefully).

Being abĺe to find Bitterns deep in reedbeds transformed my sightings ftom rare moments of seredipity, to sufficient regularity that I once took my father to the hide to see one.

15 years ago today, my late mother gave me a GPS. The idea was to help record wildlife (map is an example from before then using friends yellow Garmin).

I contributed a bit towards the cost to get one with a map display. Since then #OpenStreetMap has been an ongoing distraction from the original purpose.

Today's shot is a view over one of the lakes at Attenborough Nature Reserve, Nottingham UK. Nestled into the far bank of the lake is a bird hide. I've often thought about taking a few hours out to spend time just watching the lake from the hide, but for some reason never have. I'm not a birder, not into bird watching, but I imagine it would be a satisfying experience to just sit and watch nature.
