  1. Resurrecting this thread in order to add (4) Vesta and (2) Pallas, the 2nd and 3rd largest asteroids in the solar system.

Each image has about half an hour of exposure time with the Thirty Millimetre Telescope in them, which was more than enough for these relatively bright main belt asteroids.

As with all the other (minor)planet GIFs in this thread the data were processed in Siril with RC Astro and VeraLux scripts, and cropped and giffified in GIMP.

  2. Finally, for now, Saturn. Massively overexposed on Saturn itself but that meant that three of Saturn's many, many moons were visible.

Beltalowda will be please to hear that I will be doing the same for (2) Pallas and (4) Vesta soon. I got images of them last night and will get a second set tonight.

  3. Initial integration of NGC 6888, the Crescent Nebula. I will need to get more data over additional sessions, but was pleased with this initial effort.

  4. First attempt at reprocessing images from the Seestar S30 Pro smart telescope, using my Prawn Nebula data from Friday night.

The first image is processed fully automatically, by the Seestar itself, and the second is my manual reprocessing using the Siril software on my computer.

I'm still impressed with how good a job the smart telescope is able to do in real time. The results make for a great live preview and are honestly just fine for viewing on small screens. If you have the option it is definitely worth the effort to reprocess the data on a computer, though.

  9. Erakis (Mu Cephei) - The Garnet Star is a red supergiant or hypergiant star in the northern constellation Cepheus. It is officially named the Garnet Star; Mu Cephei is its Bayer designation, which is Latinized from μ Cephei and abbreviated Mu Cep or μ Cep. This star appears garnet red and is located at the edge of the IC 1396 nebula. It is a 4th magnitude star easily visible to the naked eye under good observing conditions.

This photo of a supernova appearing in spiral galaxy M101 is a gem for at least two reasons:
    - it is beautiful and it won a section of the Wikimedia Science Photo Contest
    and
    - it was taken by Serhiy Khomenko and it shows how there are people in #Ukraine, who despite the war and alarms and power cuts were able to even care so deeply about the universe in May 2023, and they still do now 💪

  12. This is a question to all the #astrophotograph community out there. The #1 thing I'm struggling with is a very basic thing. That's what settings to use for exposure time , gain ,etc. Or better how do I calc them for a particular target? I have stuff that works but I don't know if I can do better.
Living in Seattle gives me a very small window to work and I want to spend that time capturing photons rather than experimenting with settings. Looking for people to follow and websites to browse.

  13. For fun I tried Facebook's new scientific/wikipedia article generating AI #Galactica on the topic “planetary nebula astrophotography”. The article it produced was decent - galactica.org/?prompt=wiki+art - probably good enough for wikipedia with a little clean up of repetition and adding of citations. #astrophotograph #ai #wikipedia

  14. A video of the sun I took using my Telescope with a solar filter on it.
