@siracusa #askatp just set up accounts for my 11y old daughter on my Mac studio and MBP. I haven't used multiple accounts since forever and dear god is it slow. "Fast user switching" sometimes takes 0.5-1m to become responsive again. Laggy window drag or CMD+TAB. These are fairly modern Macs with 32 and 36GB RAM and it persists even if nothing is open on either account that is logged in. Do we know if Golden Gate has any performance improvements in this space?

re: #askATP #atpfm backup strategies
I was visiting family just last week and one of my wife’s friends told us about how she stored all her older iPhone photos on an external HDD to manage storage space. It stopped mounting one day and it ended up costing her $1800 for a clean room data reconstruction.
“What price do you put on your memories of your kids growing up”
I mentioned that of course now she’s going to do something moving forward. Not just use a single hard drive.
“Oh, you’re saying I should put them in the ‘cloud’”
ANYTHING was my response
Some people are so allergic to subscription costs.
The comedian Jimmy Carr had a saying “if you have problems that money can solve, you don’t have problems”. At the end of the day, it’s a tax on convenience and to not have problems. Just do it.
She was lucky to get all but 3 files back. She would have been on the hook for $1800 regardless of the outcome.

Yet again I am asking:
Why does Backblaze frequently take up 8gb of RAM on my 16gb 14”MBP? And often more. Always resulting in a significant slowdown and choppy music replay.I have complained to BZ frequently about this and they never have an answer.
Yes it’s set to only operate at night, a setting it ignores.
Is Backblaze still the best online back up tool or is there a more efficient one? #askatp #macos #mac

@atpfm I read this article ( https://ykvm.com/2026/07/swiftui-a-story-of-mediocrity/ ) and it got me thinking. SwiftUI looked really exciting when it lunched, but it’s now been out longer than the time between Mac OS X 10.0 and the iPhone. I’m mostly in the web world and have only played with it, but you’ve all spoken about fighting with SwiftUI through the years. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the article. What needs to happen for things to get better? Do you think Ternus can help here? Thanks! #AskATP

@atpfm #askatp it’s been a while since you’ve moved to Mastodon. Have you ever regretted the move?

@atpfm I know John cut his teeth in Pearl, Marco in PHP, and I'm not sure about Casey. I'm wondering for each of you, if you were launching a fairly complicated new site today, the type that needs a backend, no legacy code to deal with, what would you write the front end in and what would you write the backend in? React? Swift? Node? Your personal old reliable? #AskATP

Fellow Apple nerds please help!
I set the Digital Crown on my AirPods Max to increase volume by rotating "front to back" (same as a normal volume knob if it was horizontal), but the direction is randomly flipping as I'm using my Mac. No restarts or disconnects, I'll just randomly find it's changed as I blast my ears or suddenly can't hear.
Still can't find any consistent cause. On 15.7.4 & it's happened in Logic Pro, PlexAmp, Apple Music, Safari, Steam...

@atpfm Day one listener and experienced developer here. I have an itch for a Mac app but zero experience in Apple’s development ecosystem. The web and youtube are flooded with tutorials and resources, but it’s hard to tell which one are worth my time. Do you have any recommendations for starters? What are the knowledge bases that you use on a daily basis during development (e.g. documentation on the framework, swift and swiftui, etc.)?

@atpfm
If you create shortcuts, how do you debug them? Is there a debugger somewhere that can be used, or do you use the equivalent of printf() periodically?

@atpfm @marcoarment @caseyliss @siracusa The Vision Neo should just be the Apple AR glasses. Thank you for coming to my TernusTalk. #askatp

@atpfm regarding backups, especially offsite ones various external providers (Glacier, B2, etc), do y'all do anything to secure sensitive documents? PDFs with SSNs, medical records, or other items feel a bit strange to simply have uploaded to the "cloud."
To be fair, I just use Backblaze anyway, so it's more of a retroactive concern of mine. Encrypting prior to upload sounds exhausting and fraught.
