  1. @atpfm Day one listener and experienced developer here. I have an itch for a Mac app but zero experience in Apple’s development ecosystem. The web and youtube are flooded with tutorials and resources, but it’s hard to tell which one are worth my time. Do you have any recommendations for starters? What are the knowledge bases that you use on a daily basis during development (e.g. documentation on the framework, swift and swiftui, etc.)?

  6. #AskATP When (if?) you collaborate on a Markdown document, how do you do it? Are there any 'native' collaborative Markdown editors? If not, or in preference, would you recommend Google Docs (with its rudimentary Markdown import & export), or a Git repo, or something else?

I believe your show notes are in Google Docs? But as native Google Docs, not a proxy for Markdown or some other file format?

If you create shortcuts, how do you debug them? Is there a debugger somewhere that can be used, or do you use the equivalent of printf() periodically?

Do you think apple should let users have an easier way of installing their own apps on ios in the age of LLMs? (Maybe finally sideloading).

It's now so easy to make apps that are tailor suited for you and not good for the appstore, that android has an advantage for this. Recently I forked and started using an android reader app that has features only I would want, and one big reason it's on android is cuz sideloading is trivial.

Also related to Marco's great saunter app

  20. @atpfm regarding backups, especially offsite ones various external providers (Glacier, B2, etc), do y'all do anything to secure sensitive documents? PDFs with SSNs, medical records, or other items feel a bit strange to simply have uploaded to the "cloud."

To be fair, I just use Backblaze anyway, so it's more of a retroactive concern of mine. Encrypting prior to upload sounds exhausting and fraught.

  25. Little sad PSA: my 10y old daughter just cried because Apple removed one of her favorite games from Arcade. She played for over 2y, trained and named dozens of dragons. Gone. No warning, no notifications, no chance to at least take screenshots of her favorite dragons. The app is still installed on two iPads but it refuses to open saying it’s been removed. Arcade is genuinely great value if you have smaller kids (no ads/IAPs). But this is sad and terrible customer experience #askatp #askupgrade

  26. Is there some foolproof way of changing focus modes from the lock screen?
If I wake up before my alarm goes off and I wish to take my phone off of sleep mode, it takes at least 5 tries to get it right. I use some combination of tapping, pressing, force pressing, and long pressing. Inevitably my phone takes me through lock screen editing a couple times on the way to trying to disable Sleep.

  31. @atpfm In episode 685 John talks about in an #askatp section how going to a two-year cycle for macOS wouldn’t solve the problem as it’s a scheduling issue.

But what about thr OS running on a tick-tock style release cycle where every other year it’s new features or polish and bug fixing?

This would also double as making every other OS release an spiritual LTS style release for those of us who want something reliable.

A lot of what I love so much about mac hardware is the polish and reliability. It’d be nice to see that in software too.

  36. @atpfm Mac hardware represents just under 8% of Apple’s revenue. It will probably be overtaken by AirPods soon.

My question is this. Which Apple CEO will remove the Mac from their lineup? Will it be John Ternus? He could be CEO until 2040. Do we think Mac will exist in hardware form then? Will it be the next CEO after Ternus?

If the best selling Mac of all time is basically an iPhone in a bigger chassis, why not sell macOS as an app for iPhone users and save on manufacturing costs? #askatp

  41. #askatp question, probably for @siracusa?
I noticed some photos and videos on social media are a lot brighter on my newer iOS devices / MacOS laptop. So I tried the HDR editing features in lightroom, and it works! But, it doesn't show the brighter (highlights) version by default in iPhoto, you have to zoom in. Why? It's kinda annoying...

  46. @siracusa I really enjoyed the portion in the latest special episode where you tried to correct @marcoarment on how he pronounced the word “enum”, so I have an #askatp question:

Would you mind asking @marcoarment to pronounce these words on-air?

    - numeric type
