  1. @caseyliss I appreciate the examples of practical AI uses that come up on #atpfm. I feel like I was living in your wheelhouse this weekend when I had Claude help me with ubiquiti and home assistant optimizations. It wrote a few python scripts to pull WiFi configs and stats to help me clean up my radio space and understand “more power is better than less and pick random channels that don’t overlap” wasn’t optimal. It also told me there was no purpose to upgrading my access points. Then I had it help make nicer dashboards in HA and write automations for alarms that I never bothered to tackle. It fixed an integration I could never get to work and gave me some garage door options since the CEO over myQ is an asshat.

I didn’t have Claude manage these systems - but to help me do a better job of managing them. Pretty cool and I learned things along the way.

  6. re: #askATP #atpfm backup strategies

I was visiting family just last week and one of my wife’s friends told us about how she stored all her older iPhone photos on an external HDD to manage storage space. It stopped mounting one day and it ended up costing her $1800 for a clean room data reconstruction.

“What price do you put on your memories of your kids growing up”

I mentioned that of course now she’s going to do something moving forward. Not just use a single hard drive.

“Oh, you’re saying I should put them in the ‘cloud’”

    ANYTHING was my response

Some people are so allergic to subscription costs.

The comedian Jimmy Carr had a saying “if you have problems that money can solve, you don’t have problems”. At the end of the day, it’s a tax on convenience and to not have problems. Just do it.

She was lucky to get all but 3 files back. She would have been on the hook for $1800 regardless of the outcome.

  11. This week #ATPfm boffins talked about browsers and the Chrome vs Safari thing. In my daily doings, I find that some things work with Safari and some with Chrome but most with both. I keep Brave about for Chrome internals without Chrome telemetry and prying. But it is annoying.

Remember the promise of Java, “Write once, test everywhere”. The poor web developers are in that same pickle. But they seem to skip the “test everywhere" part.

  37. Spotted a guy named Sean wearing an @atpfm M1 Pro shirt at possibly the least surprising place ever- a brewery in Silicon Valley that used to be the home to Tesla Roadster assembly. But hey, it’s an in-the-wild sighting and that counts for something.

  39. Interesting. Went to link my F1TV and AppleTV accounts. To my surprise, found that my AppleTV subscription had lapsed. They only offered me the monthly sub. I had to hop over to my Subscriptions settings and re-subscribe to AppleTV to get the annual option.
Regardless, the new system is cheaper than the AppleTV+F1TV options I was paying for separately. FOR NOW.

  41. @WarnerCrocker seems like it might be a problem endemic to Apple making Mac more like iOS & iPad OS across the board with more expected user reliance on Spotlight finding files for you instead. Recent #atpfm ATP podcast has a couple of peripheral discussions, including a user question and also @siracusa own discussions of frameworks APIs and development of his Mac IS app Hypersoace
