Quick question: in the word 'بورجر' in MSA, is the ج pronounced as usual (/ʒ/ or /dʒ͜/), or is it /g/ as in 'gift'? My textbook transcribes it as būrgar, but otherwise transcribes ج as j :neofox_thinking:

I thought Forvo could help, but the only recording for 'بورجر' cuts off right before the sound in question :neofox_thumbsdown:

Can an Arabic ن sound like an Australian R ?

(this is the word "soldier" - singular and plural - in a "learn Arabic from the news" video)

But actually, I am noticing now that the beginning of the word sounded different but is written identically?

It has that one little vowel above jeem جُ but when they write everything it looks a lot more busy, so maybe something unwritten?

I want to show off this short video which explains the neo-classical Arabic poetry movement in the 19th century pretty concisely.

In summary, the movement was largely in Egypt, but also in Lebanon and Syria and took the idea that poetry should have Classical Arabic form with contemporary thought.
