Yesterday I finished reading "The Way of the Bear" by Anne Hillerman. It's the latest in a series of books that was originally created by her father Tony Hillerman. The books are mysteries that involve the Navajo Tribal Police, the Navajo Nation, and the Hopi Nation and Zuni Pueblo.
Not only are the stories compelling, but one gains knowledge about the Navajo culture and beliefs. Tony Hillerman started out with Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee as primary characters in the Navajo Tribal Police. When Anne continued the tradition from her father she smartly focused on Bernadette Manuelito, also a Navajo Tribal Police officer, as her main character.
These books are worth reading. Since they aren't serial you can start with any of Tony or Anne's books.
