  1. Doing a lot of reading of old sword-fighting manuals in preparation for the WIP I’ll start next week. So far I’ve learned:

    1) Sir Richard Burton should just get a room with his sword instead of writing a 1000-page love letter to it

    2) I always assumed “taking someone’s measure” came from tailoring, but it turns out Measure is a technical term in sword technique, so now I think the phrase’s origin might be from checking that you’re far enough away to not get stabbed.

What writing and publishing goals (if any) am I focusing on for the rest of the year?

For the rest of the year? i.e. the next 2 months. I've got a couple of short stories I'm working on (and a novella), all of which I'm pretty passionate about. And I'm keeping on with writing and research for the novel, which I hope to finish next year.

Research is such a black hole, but it's the most fun ever!
Good luck finding what you need *and* climbing back out.

What’s been the biggest challenge with my current project?

Discovering how little I know about some aspect of the time period (1959), trying to research it, and looking up 6 hours later, better informed about whatever it was, with my head pounding (hopefully *that* won't be happening any more).

It makes me more informed about little details, but doesn't get a lot of words on paper.

How did the last couple of months go in terms of my word count or publishing goals?

I've been wildly unsuccessful in terms of writing--I've had a constant headache making words on paper hard. I've been researching instead.

We did *finally* get Permutations launched--new stories in Jack Chalker's Well World (with permission!) edited by David Boop. Super fun to write.

  37. Aargh, I've just realised the document I was relying on for all the courtesy titles for my Palace residents has got the common-at-the-time usage wrong, so now I have to go through and check every single one to see if they should be referred to as Lady Surname, Lady OwnFirstName, or Lady HusbandsFirstName.

On the plus side, I should be able to use a lot more Lady OwnFirstNames, which is a bit more user-friendly.

  42. I have now researched, for direct and indirect plot reasons:
    - the entire history of Hampton Court Palace
    - Various larger than life courtiers over about 200 years
    - The Civil War, the Napoleonic Wars, the first Opium War
    - The Townsend-Farquar family
    - Several murders, several suicides
    - Penang, Mauritius, and the British colonisation thereof
    - Nineteenth century gardening
    - Nineteenth century daguerreotypes

and have further created spreadsheets across my MC's entire lifespan of who was living in which palace apartment when, and decided if they would have been friends, frenemies, or enemies.

Me: I am finally ready to start my new WIP! 🎉

First chapter, first scene: they're playing whist. How do you play whist?

    Me: FUCK!

  47. Tonight’s historical-fact-lining-up-with-narrative-need award goes to the lady from 200 years ago who had a 14-year gap between children, thus making the youngest exactly the right age that I needed.

Plus an extra special gratitude award for the blogger who asked all the same questions about Regency courtesan Julia Johnstone’s dodgy timeline that I did, and sorted it out, thus saving me hours of work to make one single line in the WIP accurate
