What writing and publishing goals (if any) am I focusing on for the rest of the year?For the rest of the year? i.e. the next 2 months. I've got a couple of short stories I'm working on (and a novella), all of which I'm pretty passionate about. And I'm keeping on with writing and research for the novel, which I hope to finish next year.

What’s been the biggest challenge with my current project?Discovering how little I know about some aspect of the time period (1959), trying to research it, and looking up 6 hours later, better informed about whatever it was, with my head pounding (hopefully *that* won't be happening any more).
It makes me more informed about little details, but doesn't get a lot of words on paper.

We did *finally* get Permutations launched--new stories in Jack Chalker's Well World (with permission!) edited by David Boop. Super fun to write.

Aargh, I've just realised the document I was relying on for all the courtesy titles for my Palace residents has got the common-at-the-time usage wrong, so now I have to go through and check every single one to see if they should be referred to as Lady Surname, Lady OwnFirstName, or Lady HusbandsFirstName.
On the plus side, I should be able to use a lot more Lady OwnFirstNames, which is a bit more user-friendly.

Tonight’s historical-fact-lining-up-with-narrative-need award goes to the lady from 200 years ago who had a 14-year gap between children, thus making the youngest exactly the right age that I needed.
Plus an extra special gratitude award for the blogger who asked all the same questions about Regency courtesan Julia Johnstone’s dodgy timeline that I did, and sorted it out, thus saving me hours of work to make one single line in the WIP accurate

I picked up a research book for my new WIP for the first time in weeks today, and read an entire chapter on Highland naming traditions, nicknames, and proverbs about clans -- with documentation from primary sources.
I tell you truly, I have not had the mental energy to do this since October.
A small amount of work, to be sure ... but I did it.

I'm terrible at this. It's been an issue since my hubby moved his office upstairs anticipating foot surgery. It's since been revised once, and needs to heal before they can revise again . . .

I put xxx and a note in square brackets in my WIP to mark things I need to fix or properly research.
But I’m going to have to start writing [xxx you already checked this and it’s FINE, move on] to make myself stop re-checking everything twice over 🧐
Yes, they had fashion magazines in the 1850s and yes, they actually referred to them as magazines, it’s FINE, move on.

Today, in my adventures in foolishly asking the internet general research questions:
The internet, shamelessly repeating the same factoid endlessly: throwing rice at weddings is an ancient tradition dating back to the Romans!
An anonymous old lady writing a cranky letter to the editor in 1895: this is a modern tradition that doesn't date back more than forty years and needs to stop before it takes a new bride’s eye out.
