Still need to drill the ventilation and power supply holes, but pretty much there on the #AllSkyCamera refurb after 6 years of constant abuse by Scottish weather, which is, shall we say, "non-trivial".
Needs a new dome, simple purchase from https://allskyoptics.com , who sponsored the project via discounts and support. But a tough bit of amateur kit. -
Most of the #AllSkyCamera gubbins in place. Not often I get to cut threads (for mounting the heat sink with bolts), so that was fun. Need to find a way to ensure the Pi doesn't short against the sink. To do: power supply fitting, bolt and seal dome, weatherproof vents (going to try designing and printing my own).
And speaking of the Pi, doing well for 6 years of harsh conditions, but showing it. Going to test it to failure 👏 -
Heat sink for the #AllSkyCamera refurbishment, salvaged from a stove fan. Happens to be exactly the right height for the new case and dome. Weatherproof vents and a fan will blow cold air across it.

@cosmiclibrarian “Ultimately, the early 2026 fireball wave highlights a glaring blind spot in our planetary defense and astronomical monitoring.
Right now, scientists are relying heavily on #crowdsourced eyewitness accounts to calculate #trajectories. When the 7-ton asteroid exploded over Ohio, the only #AMS affiliated #AllskyCamera in the state was offline.”
Loosing Carl, terrible; Loosing his expertise is really bad right now.

Further work on the #AllSkyCamera revamp: new casing, as the old one is starting to crumble under UV and Scottish weather. But forgot, buying new casing, that the top surface needs to be flat to mate to the dome. So 3D printed an adaptor (fun high school maths challenge) and then needed a stand to hold the camera in position: brainwave, I've got a knackered Peltier fan for the stove, and what an astrocam wants in a stand is a really good heatsink.

Oh my sweet baby, what have the years done to your once beautiful features?
To be fair, it's been 4 years on the highest point for miles around, 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, in the worst weather the Northern Highlands can throw at electronics. Yet it persists.
Main problems are plastic, internal camera mount has degraded/slipped, the dome is seriously clouded by age and the quarter turn screws are NOT coming out despite my best brute force and ignorance.

Really bright flare on the #AllSkyCamera about 01:20 this morning. Meteor-bright, but covered about 10 degrees of arc and showed up in 3 frames of 20 second each. Guessing it's something orbital and a good bit higher than the ISS etc, but big/reflective. Best match I can find is the SL-16 rocket, but that doesn't seem high enough, orbital period is only ~10 mins longer than ISS.
Any ideas?
(Sorry, not got copies of the pics, will tomorrow.) -
Caught a nice burst of #aurora on the school #allSkyCamera last night. North is the 9 o'clock position.
-
The #SpaceX #Falcon9 #RocketPlume was captured on 3 of our #RaspberryPi #MeteorCameras, #auroracam + #AllSkyCamera. I've put the clips into one video with extra DSLR photos. Oxfordshire, UK 19:55-20:05UT 24 March '25. Watch here: https://youtu.be/-BH_Eg4hWaw

The usual problem with an #AllSkyCamera is the sensor pumps out a lot of heat. When the temperature rapidly plummets to minus 10C however...
(Aurora flickers still visible near the bottom)

Nothing particularly spectacular, but a nice night on the #AllSkyCamera last night. Bit of aurora flicker near the horizon, not enough for the naked eye by a long way. The big obnoxious light is that Moon. https://youtu.be/7nV3dbo6dtY

Wow - a whole year of #AllSkyCamera timelapse, day and night, in about 22 minutes!
WARNING: Rapidly flashing images. -
Nice clear night on the #AllSkyCamera last night. Milky Way, Moon near the beginning (right), Jupiter is the big bright "star" above Orion (near the bottom). Quite a few satellites in near-polar orbits, so either Earth monitoring stuff like ESA's Sentinels or spy stuff. Aurora on the left near the beginning, not a substantial naked-eye show.

We had more #aurora overnight on 7th/8th October 2024 captured on our #AuroraCam #AllSkyCamera + 2 of our #MeteorCameras (in mono). There was eve a #StableAuroralRedArc #SARArc visible on the all sky cam! Oxfordshire, UK (52' N). Watch the video here:

Playing with wrapping #AllSkyCamera footage onto a curved surface in Blender to recreate what it actually films, just a quick try, but this has potential.
-
Last night's all sky camera footage. Pretty sunset, then some aurora and a few Perseids, plus the milky way. #AllSkyCamera #Highlands #Scotland
-
Odd catch on the #AllSkyCamera over the weekend. The orange squiggle from centre to edge around the 8 o'clock position. Looks like a fading contrail, but it's against higher cloud, and it's not there in pics from 30s before or 30s after.
My current thinking is that it's an insect or similar, landing on the dome a few cm from the lens, so hugely defocussed, and maybe only for part of an exposure. -
Geminids tonight - and cloudy outside, although it was gloriously clear earlier.
So I have high hopes for the refurbished #AllSkyCamera at work. Still needs proper weatherproofing, but it'll put up with a damp night. Most importantly, adding the fan has taken the sensor temp from 55C to 19C in daytime, which should make a huge difference to the thermal noise / gain capability. Subzero tonight, bring it on... -
#THUNDER! (Na na na naa, na na naaa na)
-
Last night's #AllSkyCamera footage - couple of brief breaks in the cloud to let me know what I was missing! #aurora
(North is about 2 o'clock) -
Continuing to tinker with the #AllSkyCamera settings. Quite like this, fixed 20s exposure and let the gain autobalance up to 200. Ursa major nice and obvious in the centre, hint of aurora top right around 0030 real time (clock top left). Nice polar satellite flare in the startrail image too.
-
Nice moonrise on this #AllSkyCamera footage. I need to get up there and give the dome a wipe down after the holidays.
-
Last night's #aurora from the #AllSkyCamera at school. North is roughly the 2 o'clock position. There's a lot of cloud, but it shines through...the green is bright enough to overexpose the camera (meant to pick up milky way etc) but some nice reds. Unusually long display, nearly all night.
-
Got the colour balance much better on the #AllSkyCamera. JJ Abrams is currently directing, hence the lens flare.
-
This is a keogram. It's a way of visualising aurora intensity through a night. Dusk is left, dawn right. It's a series of vertical strips through each frame of the #allSkyCamera footage from Sunday.
Don't be fooled by the green on the right, that's cloud (need to tweak colour balance), #aurora is the streaks top left. Big bright splotch bottom left is the Moon. -
Fairly average night on the #AllSkyCamera. Bit of stars, then you see JJ Abrams riding in on The Moon.
