“The fact that [Paktyawal] survived the Taliban but couldn’t survive ICE paints a dark picture of the morbid effectiveness of institutional violence,”
"Paktyawal’s wife told #AfghanEvac that federal agents refused her attempts to pass along a rescue inhaler that Paktyawal relied on to breathe during emergencies. "#USpol #Fascism #ICE #War #AlliesRefugees

“This man fought our war for 10 years,” said Shawn VanDiver, president of #AfghanEvac. “He had six kids, one of whom is an American citizen. He was brought here by the United States of America. He’s been working hard in Texas, paying taxes ... He was doing everything right.”

Many Afghans living in the U.S. are afraid to leave their houses, fearing they’ll be swept up by immigration officials or attacked with hate speech, said Shawn VanDiver, president of the San Diego-based group #AfghanEvac.

Today the Trump Administration ended TPS (temporary protected status) for Afghans on the grounds that it is now a safe place to return.
This is untrue, and it's a total betrayal of our Afghan allies who, at grave risk to their lives and the lives of their families, assisted our Marines and soldiers during the war as facilitators and interpreters. They took that risk for a chance at a better life in the US. Sending them back is a death sentence. #AfghanEvac

"'This man served with our troops. He came through the front door. He followed every rule. And we locked him up anyway,' said Shawn VanDiver, executive director for #AfghanEvac, a nonprofit that advocates for U.S. wartime allies. He said it's unknown how many Afghan allies have been detained by ICE officials." https://www.cbsnews.com/news/afghan-ally-detained-by-ice-immigration-court/

Shawn VanDiver: "ICE is now arresting Afghan allies—at their first court hearing—after they entered the United States legally. An Afghan ally who served alongside U.S. forces was legally paroled into the U.S. and showed up for his first hearing. DHS detained him anyway—using a vague improvidently issued excuse. He followed the rules. We have the video. This must stop."

This is one of so many things that are so fucked up.
“According to according to Shawn VanDiver, founder of #AfghanEvac,a coalition of veterans and other groups working in the region, 15,000 or so Pakistan-based Afghan refugees were approved as ready to travel. They are now at a terrifying impasse. They cannot push forward, nor can they pull back. Their cases will not progress until at least April 25, and possibly never.” - Belinda Luscombe

The U.S. decision also leaves in limbo thousands of other Afghans who have been approved for resettlement as refugees in the U.S. but have not yet been assigned flights from Afghanistan or from neighboring Pakistan, they said.
"Afghans and advocates are panicking," said VanDiver.

We hope they will reconsider," he said of contacts with Trump's transition team -

Just one of those periodic reminders of the absolute chaos in Aug 2021 with evac of #HKIA airport in #Afghanistan. I keep renewing http://hkia.info because I want it to stand as a small symbol of what went down. #AfghanEvac

Powerful story. Deep in, this shameful context.
Roughly 52,000 Afghans have applied for a program called humanitarian parole. As of mid-April, just 760 people had been approved.
By comparison, more than 300,000 Ukrainians arrived in the US under various programs in just over a year.
“I don’t understand why the world has had their arms so open to Ukrainians and so closed to Afghans,” said Shawn VanDiver, U.S. Navy veteran who started #AfghanEvac. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/21/world/americas/darien-gap-afghan-migration.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare -
Evacuees and U.S. citizens can now apply to reunite with family members still in Afghanistan.
“This impacts every Afghan the US brought here under parole status who still has family in Afghanistan eligible for reunification,” #AfghanEvac founder Shawn VanDiver tells CNN:
