Here is the tale of one of Galloway's prodigal sons, Alexander Murray.
From a very young age it was clear this shepherd's son was exceptionally bright. He would go on to be one of the most pre-eminent language scholars in the UK, and he is memorialised with a Monument near Tolnotrie and the Grey Mare's Tail on the Queen's Way, Newton Stewart.

The town of Gatehouse was built to bring the Industrial Revolution to Galloway, and saw all kinds of industry spring up, then fade when it became clear the town could not really compete with Paisley, Liverpool and Manchester.

Elspeth McEwen was an elderly lady living on her own near Balmaclellan in the Glenkens when her neighbours accused her of Witchcraft. It was the 1690s and the Witch Panics were drawing to a close in Scotland.
But still, Elspeth was first brought before the Kirk Session at Dalry, then sent to Kirkcudbright Tolbooth. She would never return home.https://youtu.be/y13nmspt16w

Advent Day Eighteen
The main biographer of Elspeth Buchan and her Buchanites was Joseph Train, a fascinating man in his own right.
Friend to Sir Walter Scott, he was the keen antiquary who tried to steal St John's chair from St John's Town of Dalry (see earlier in this thread!).

The third video in my series about Elspeth Buchan and the Buchanites comes out later today, so here is the first in case you want to catch up.
The Buchanites were a cultish Christian Sect led by Elspeth in the late 18th century. She believed she was the Woman Clothed in Sun from Revelations, and preached that End Times were coming. They began in Irvine, Ayrshire, but later fled to Galloway.
