A landmark indeed. I believe laws that govern the development, production and distribution of #addictive and harmful products ought to be basically #technology neutral. A product deliberately designed to addict kids for profit should be viewed similarly, whether it is a chemical or a service.

Modern AI models tend extremely toward sycophancy: they confirm users' behavior 50% more often than humans do — even when users describe manipulation, deception, or other harmful behaviors in their queries.

Interacting with such flattering AI models also apparently reduces users' willingness to resolve interpersonal conflicts. At the same time, they are reinforced in their conviction of being in the right. Les réseaux sociaux sont accusés de tous les maux. Récemment, la maison-mère de TikTok a été accusée d’avoir conçu sciemment une application addictive au détriment de la santé mentale des plus jeunes utilisateurs. Il y a quelque temps, Instagram était pointé du doigt, ayant conscience de l’effet négatif du réseau social sur les jeunes filles et leur santé mentale. Une étude a même affirmé qu’une utilisation excessive de TikTok pourrait être liée au déclenchement du syndrome de Gilles de la Tourette chez de nombreuses jeunes femmes.

Mais est-ce bien juste d’accabler les réseaux sociaux de la sorte ? Une nouvelle étude scientifique souligne qu’ils ne sont pas responsables de l’augmentation des maladies psychiques chez les jeunes et qu’il ne faut pas négliger d’autres facteurs.

Les réseaux sociaux ont bon dos

Une nouvelle étude vient d’être publiée dans Professional Psychology : Research and Practice, une revue spécialisée, et présente une méta-analyse de 46 études pointées sur le lien entre la détérioration de la santé mentale des jeunes et l’utilisation des réseaux sociaux.

S’il est “tout à fait justifié que les parents s’inquiètent de l’utilisation des réseaux sociaux de leurs enfants”, il faut être modéré dans son approche. Les chercheurs ayant travaillé sur cette nouvelle étude estiment que les réseaux sociaux ne sont pas uniquement nocifs et peuvent même aider à résoudre des problèmes psychiques. Il est important de relever les contenus et le type d’utilisation sur les réseaux sociaux, et pas uniquement le temps d’utilisation. Malgré un repli sur soi, certains internautes réussissent à gérer leurs problèmes psychiques et à échanger à d’autres internautes grâce à l’aide des réseaux sociaux.

De plus, si une utilisation excessive des réseaux sociaux peut être nocive et qu’il “existe bien des contenus et des formes d’utilisation susceptibles d’aggraver les problèmes chez les jeunes”, il ne faut pas tout mélanger. Le psychologue suisse Daniel Süsss affirme que “les raisons de l’augmentation des troubles psychiques chez les jeunes sont beaucoup plus complexes qu’on ne le prétend”.

Ainsi, il est primordial de prendre en compte la pression exercée sur les performances, la solitude, la peur de l’avenir ou encore l’impossibilité de faire ses preuves dans la hausse de problèmes psychiques chez les jeunes utilisateurs.

Face aux effets néfastes des réseaux sociaux et, plus globalement, des écrans, il serait plus pertinent de mieux éduquer face aux enjeux et aux risques de ces derniers. Une utilisation plus responsable est à mettre en avant, plutôt qu’une simple interdiction.
