  1. "The ruling sent shockwaves through #SiliconValley and sparked hope among families and child safety campaigners that change may finally be coming to #socialmedia. Mark Zuckerberg’s #Meta and Google’s #YouTube were found liable for deliberately designing #addictive products used by Kaley and millions of other young people.
It was one case centred on the suffering of one young person who became depressed at 10 and self-harmed, but Kaley, referred to by her first name or the initials KGM in order to protect her privacy, was the figurehead for a much bigger fight.
“We wanted them to feel it,” one of the jurors explained to reporters. “We wanted them to realise this was unacceptable.”"

  3. A landmark indeed. I believe laws that govern the development, production and distribution of #addictive and harmful products ought to be basically #technology neutral. A product deliberately designed to addict kids for profit should be viewed similarly, whether it is a chemical or a service.

  4. A frequently overlooked danger of using LLM AI:

Those who let themselves be flattered by ChatGPT and other AIs more easily become addicted to this ego validation.

Modern AI models tend extremely toward sycophancy: they confirm users' behavior 50% more often than humans do — even when users describe manipulation, deception, or other harmful behaviors in their queries.

Interacting with such flattering AI models also apparently reduces users' willingness to resolve interpersonal conflicts. At the same time, they are reinforced in their conviction of being in the right. Meanwhile, participants rated the flattering responses as higher quality, trusted the flattering model more, and are more willing to use it again — #addictive behavior through ego validation.

    💯
"Without engagement metrics or brand-building incentives, #Fediverse users shared #expertise instead of content.. Te difference fr corporate #socialmedia comes down to incentive structures. Platforms designed around narcissism & parasocial relationships produce content optimized for engagement. A federated network with no central owner produces something closer to actual knowledge-sharing, because nobody profits from making it #addictive.. Duggan calls it "te #internet I was promised in 1996""

  6. #Instagram Chief Says #SocialMedia Is Not ‘Clinically #Addictive ’ in Landmark Trial

Adam Mosseri, who leads the Meta-owned app, testified that the company was careful to test features used by young people before releasing them.

In a series of landmark trials, plaintiffs are alleging that #Meta , #TikTok , #Snap and #YouTube caused personal injury through #addictive products. Our technology reporter Cecilia Kang describes what’s at stake for tech giants and #socialmedia users.

  8. The #EuropeanCommission accused #TikTok of designing its app to be #addictive, citing features like infinite scroll and its recommendation engine. The Commission said TikTok must change its design to reduce compulsive use, particularly among minors and vulnerable adults. TikTok denied the allegations and stated it will challenge the findings. techcrunch.com/2026/02/06/eu-t #tech #media #news

But can food actually be addictive? Now some neuroscientists and food behavior researchers are trying to understand if food—particularly #ultraprocessedfoods—can be #addictive in the same way as other known substances, such as cigarettes, alcohol and cocaine."

Okay, gamers, listen UP. My brain is currently 80% caffeine, 15% late-game resource management, and 5% existential dread. So, y'know, a normal Tuesday. WHY?
