  2. Hope

    by Victoria Safford

    Our mission is to plant ourselves at the gates of hope —

    not the prudent gates of Optimism, which are somewhat narrower;

    nor the stalwart, boring gates of Common Sense;

    nor the strident gates of self-righteousness,

    which creak on shrill and angry hinges;

    nor the cheerful, flimsy garden gate of “Everything is gonna be all right,”

    but a very different,

    sometimes very lonely place,

    the place of truth-telling,

    about your own soul first of all and its condition,

    the place of resistance and defiance,

    the piece of ground from which you see the world both as it is and as it could be,

    as it might be,

    as it will be;

    the place from which you glimpse not only struggle, but joy in the struggle

    — and we stand there, beckoning and calling, telling people what we are seeing,

    asking people what they see.

  3. I cannot imagine how folks in #USA are feeling at the minute.. it's scary enough watching from a distance. But.. this may be of use to some of you. I've found #ActiveHope hugely helpful in the face of #ClimateCrisis and other disasters. The Active Hope process is 7 questions on hopes, fears and more but leads you to take action on something positive. Lots of useful info and free training resources here and many people facilitate this process in person and online activehope.info/

  4. We can be magnificent. We can turn this shit around.

  5. @ThatMan @AnarchoNinaAnalyzes - "The best time to fight fossil fuel induced climate catastrophe was sixty years ago, but the second best time is right now; billions of people’s lives are depending on it, and it’s not too late to save them." Yes, #deepdaptation on the one hand, but #Regeneration #RegenerationInternational #Permaculture #ClimateAction #Solarpunk #ActiveHope #anticapitalist #BeUngovernable on the other hand, and both feet, and the back, and the head and the heart most of all.

  6. “To practice active hope, we do not need to believe that everything will work out in the end. We need only decide who we are choosing to be and how we are choosing to function.” —@MsKellyMHayes and Mariame Kaba. nonprofitquarterly.org/hope-is @haymarketbooks #activehope #hopeculture #care #healthjustice #resilience

  7. Those who need #ActiveHope about the Climate Drift (and the current human civilization in general), you might want to checkout the latest book from the wonderful Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic)
    "The Lost Cause: a novel of climate and hope" on Kickstarter

  8. Imagine if we came together as a world, start where you are, and found a way to deal with climate change, together.

    We don’t have to agree on the root of the problem, just that the problem is, and only together, as one, can we thrive.

    After all, we all want to thrive, no?

  9. From book #ActiveHope by #JoannaMacy & #ChrisJohnstone on #ClimateDespair & Hope.

    Where are you? Business as Usual- denial/not doing your part to slow down damage; The Great Unraveling, you recognize & acknowledge there’s a problem re the natural world & climate crisis, widening inequality, dis & Misinformation re what’s going on; or The Great Turning—turning towards raising awareness & engaging in behaviors that support the flourishing of life.
    I’m moving toward The Great Turning. Join me?

  10. Join me in reading #ActiveHope by #JoannaMacy & #ChrisJohnstone

    If there’s interest, I’ll offer a free on going Zoom group to explore the book and work with #ClimateDespair (I’m American on the east coast but I’ll be sensitive to time zones).

    This will not be a (small) group to debate #ClimateChange but rather how to be a okay and PRACTICE active hope, despite the despairing circumstances, in the context that climate change is real & humanity IS in part creating this mess.

  11. @stevelord I'm new to the idea of #DeepAdaptation but had already come across #ActiveHope which I've found hugely helpful in the face of #ClimateCrisis and other things. The Active Hope process is 7 questions on hopes, fears and more but leads you to take action on something positive. Lots of useful info and free training resources here activehope.info/

  12. @NatureMC yes! That is exactly it. It depends on what you mean by hope. For me the word does have a certain passivity about it, plus i was getting a bit fed up with science commmnicators emphasising need for positive mesages when majority of people are actually clueless - not bombarded with negative messages at all but deliberately kept in dark about just how bad things are already. But #ActiveHope is good and motivates me too.

  13. @natecull BTW here's an intro to the concept of the #GreatTurning adapted from the book #ActiveHope by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone:
