Members of my casual group expressed interest in trying heavier train games. I thought "why not?" and invited them to try out an 18xx game.
But which one? I have 1825, 1829 Mainline, 1846, 1860, 18 India (and 18 BosWash), and 18GB. I went with 18GB because a) it's good b) it's modern and looks nice and c) it has a random distribution variant for the initial auction. 1825 Units would've been ok, too, but I have 1825 set up for combined unit games only at the moment.
With a fourth player recruited from my main group we ventured into business of running trains in Great Britain. Teaching the game to someone who had never even seen an 18xx games was interesting, but not that hard. I didn't go super deep into the detail, as I was expecting that we would be explaining a lot of the options in more detail as we go.
I can say we did a good job in teaching the game and helping the newbies: they took the first two places, leaving the experts behind. The top three was pretty close, but I was badly behind due to some failed train business. It was a good representative of how 18GB runs: we didn't see directorless companies, but we did see some train problems leading to insolvency and emergency 10-share conversions. The winner ran three companies, two of which were quite good in the end.
The newbies enjoyed the ride. Perhaps we'll get two new 18xx players to our pool – we could certainly use some reinforcements.

I played #18GB yesterday and it was...ok. Actually, more on the don't need to play again side of ok. The core puzzle are the plethora of OO and XX tiles and how to build profitable routes, where to token etc for the late game. My main grip with the game was that over the course of the game, there just were less and less exciting options, because starting a new company became pointless because of how developed the center already was without access. #18xx @18xx #boardgames #brettspiele
