Imagine this in a computer that is running microscopy equipment that runs 24/7. Why scientific equipment vendors continue to use Microsoft when Linux and other operating systems are an option is beyond me. Inertia? Stupidity? And their closed-source device drivers force us to keep their provided computers.

My (Win10) computer just waited for me to take my coffee break to do a forced restart. No asking, no warning, didn't care that I had unsaved documents opened and Matlab running.
I am sick and tired of this. I have already tried all the tricks to pause updates that cause restarts (can't pause forever) and reduce the "active hours" (can't reduce them down to 0).I want a program that completely stops forced restarts - does that exist? 🙏

Org set up and pushed out keyboarded layouts in several languages. #ESOL classes, so many people with many languages, so great! Students can easily switch to French, Arabic, Chinese, etc. input. Wonderful.
But, it took 20 minutes to find out how to add my dvorak back to the list - in "Advanced Keyboard Settings".
Next day, #dvorak is gone from the list. But, still applied in advanced settings.
BUT, suddenly the lock screen IS dvorak!

1) add #dvorak layout
2) switch to dvorak layout
3) lock screen
4) when unlocking, keyboard is switched back to qwerty
5) after unlocking, desktop keyboard is qwertyWhy can't it just stay dvorak? If someone clicks "other user", is it that hard to switch to qwerty then?

If you import #MSWord docs into #Adobe #Indesign you will nearly always want it set to remove formatting, to prevent stylesheet clashes and other issues.
When you do this, Indesign will import tracked changes!!!
You can turn that off but it's greyed out. So to do it, you have to turn off Remove formatting, then click off tracked changes, then click Remove formatting back on. It's completely mad -

The non-breaking spaces is weird #MSWord shit that started 5-7 years ago, I think with #Office365.
I use #Libreoffice in my law practice and come across these weird space characters and line breaks in #MicrosoftWord docs all the time now. It's maddening.

Let's talk about WordPerfect vs. Word too. WordPerfect 6.0 released in 1993 allowed freely to place images in the document and would even flow the text around the image if you placed it in the middle of the document.
Word still is absolute dog shit when dealing with images in documents in 2025. WordPerfect was not killed off by monopolists but by greedy corporations who calculated that WordPerfect cost 400 USD while MS Office cost 400 USD and also had Excel and PowerPoint.

A post on the face place reminded me that at one time back when I was still occasionally using MSFT wares I had the dominant text mincer application there tell me that
"The document is too large to save. Delete some text before saving."

Now I'm a tad curious whether anyone else has been bitten by that variant. (This would have been early-noughties time if it matters)
