22b. There’s no such thing as a slow unit test. With tightly scoped unit tests testing behavior, your tests act as a de facto specification for your code. Ideally if someone wants to understand your code, they should be able to turn to the test suite as "documentation" for the behavior. Ideally I'd be able to spawn some MIR from source and then assert certain properties hold before/after certain MIR passes.

Critical tech. artist Mocksim’s plan is to locate all the algorithms he can find. They begin with Abū Ja‘far Muhammad ibn Mūsa al-Ḵwārizmī, inspired by Indian mathematics and the thousand-year-old Agnicayana ritual, pass through the likes of George Boole, Skibbereen’s Percy Ludgate, Donegal’s Kay McNulty, not to mention Katherine Johnson and the ‘Hidden Figures’ gang in the USA. Many now live inside AI, emails, maps, surveillance and nudging software. Others are not digital at all but appear as rules, routines, scripts and habits. People talk about algorithms all the time, but what, and where, are they? It’s time someone got on the case. No better man for the job than Mocksim!

I seemed to have signed up to a couple recently that I am not super impressed with.
I used to use peopleperhour.com although it was quite varied in terms of quality and $ some clients were willing to offer. PPH tried to bring people in line.

IoT has made it much easier to collect data from the physical world. Sensors can tell us where an asset is, how a machine is behaving, whether temperature is changing, or when equipment moves from one location to another.
But there is a problem:
Collecting data is easy. Understanding it at scale is harder. This is where AI and IoT start working well together.
IoT + AI = AIoT
A simple way to look at it:
IoT → collects data
AI → interprets data
AIoT → uses connected data to support better decisions
For example, an industrial machine can continuously send vibration and temperature data. Instead of someone manually checking every reading, an AI system can look for unusual patterns and potentially flag an issue before the machine fails.
The same concept can be applied to:
Asset tracking
Manufacturing
Logistics
Predictive maintenance
Construction
Warehouse operations
Supply chain monitoring
The Important Part Is the Action
I think AIoT becomes genuinely useful when the workflow goes beyond a dashboard. A basic workflow could look like:
Sensor → Data → AI analysis → Insight → Action
If a sensor detects something unusual, the system should ideally help answer:
What happened? Why might it be happening? What should we do next?
That's more valuable than simply collecting another dataset.
What About Physical AI?
This also connects with the growing idea of Physical AI — AI systems that interact more directly with physical environments, machines, vehicles, and equipment. IoT provides the sensing layer. AI provides the intelligence layer. Physical systems provide the environment where those decisions matter.
Companies such as Aperture Venture Studio are exploring this intersection of AI, IoT, and real-world industrial applications. Of course, AI isn't always necessary. If a simple sensor and alert solve the problem, that's probably the better solution.
The real challenge is identifying where intelligence can actually improve an existing workflow. That's what makes AIoT interesting to me: it's not just about connecting more devices.
