  1. Like Lula, I'm also a man who cries. And I've lost count of how many times I've cried since Saturday, especially after the wonderful news.

I think it's important to share this in a world where unhealthy ideals of masculinity are so often promoted, particularly by far-right extremists, but certainly not only by them.

Men cry. And there's nothing wrong with showing our emotions.

  2. Today we celebrate. But it won't be easy. Both chambers of Brazil's Congress, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, have shifted to the right.

And our democracies remain under threat.

Let's prepare better for the next battle, in Brazil and elsewhere.

Democracy is about much more than voting.

  4. Some hopeful news from Serbia!

Aleksandar Vučić concedes defeat to a student-led movement in the parliamentary elections, after nearly two years of protests.

A reminder that political change is still possible, even after years of democratic backsliding.

Something to inspire us and keep hope alive.

  5. Yesterday, I watched the Mexican film Flies (Moscas), which deals with cancer. I found it particularly sad and moving, perhaps because I watched it just one day before the Brazilian presidential election.

I couldn't help seeing an analogy between cancer and the erosion of democracy.

Cancer can develop in different parts of the body. Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, and some can become cancerous, spreading and eventually threatening the entire organism.

I kept thinking about how something similar can happen to democracy. Undemocratic forces can emerge in different parts of society and its institutions, gradually weakening the very system that allows them to exist.

Watching a film about such a devastating disease, while fearing for the future of democracy in my country, was an unexpectedly emotional experience.

  6. P.S. More than 33 million Brazilians didn't vote in the first round, and we don't yet know how many will abstain today, but I bet it still will be huge. Perhaps many of them were overwhelmed by their daily struggles, and the time and emotional energy that political engagement demands simply didn't fit into their lives. Maybe we shouldn't be so quick to judge them.

  7. Brazil may have lost its democracy. More than 60 million people may have voted for that outcome. But another 50 million voted against it, and millions of children and teenagers may now face a very difficult future. They certainly don't deserve to grow up in a country without democracy.

I'm aware that many people are skeptical of democracy. Perhaps it's because they've never experienced the full consequences of tyranny and the greed for power.

Most people are too busy trying to make a living to even learn how they can participate in democratic decisions that directly affect their lives. And even those who are informed often lack the time to participate, whether by writing to elected representatives, speaking with them, or holding them accountable.

Last but not least, if democracy falls, I'd rather die fighting for it than stand by and do nothing.

That's why I voted, alongside more than 50 million others.

I know I no longer live in Brazil, but I still care deeply about the people who live there, especially my family and friends.

  8. Fairphone 5 charging problems? Try cleaning your USB-C port before replacing it!

    forum.fairphone.com/t/fairphon

I’m sharing this because I nearly replaced a perfectly functional USB-C module. It turned out that compacted dirt was preventing the cable from connecting properly!

I’d already ordered a replacement module, but I’ve decided to keep it as a spare in case I need it someday. Besides, it’s a small way to support Fairphone and its commitment to repairability!

  9. If more people outside Brazil understood the country and its culture, I think works like Bachianas Brasileiras, by Heitor Villa-Lobos, would be much more appreciated.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I particularly love O Trenzinho do Caipira from No. 2 and the Cantilena from No. 5. And No. 4 is magnificent from beginning to end!
