@wauz @econetwork "land used for producing coffee is not used for food" - this is only true in a monoculture, where you allow only one crop to grow in a given patch of land. The monoculture is the main part of what makes it colonial. European colonists had (and still have) an industrial mentality and were used to a forgiving, temperate climate where you can sometimes get away with a monoculture for decades, so they started monocultures everywhere they went. In most colonized areas, this displaced the more sustainable polyculture practices, often destroying fertility very quickly. This is still going on (for example in the huge oil palm plantations) and is the main cause of #desertification.
In polycultures, the cultivated patch of land can be designed to be self-sustaining in the same way as a natural ecosystem. That generally includes returning surplus to the land, for example by composting the cascara. In that sense, eating what you grow is not the only way to use the land sustainably.
Long story short, coffee is fine if you mix it with other crops. As you can read elsewhere in this thread, this is exactly what EYN is doing.

@econetwork Is a highly idealistic project founded by people who have very little of their own, but who still want to help others to improve their #foodSecurity, educate #futureGenerations, protect the #environment, fight #hiddenHunger and boost #biodiversity. Their activities breathe #permaculture. This type of #cooperative, small-scale, bottom-up initiative is exactly what we need, everywhere. #PleaseBoost and #donate to help them buy a small plot of land, so they can have a permanent base to operate from.

Highlight for #SolarPunkSunday -- @econetwork !
"As we told you dear friends, this is one of our #gardenbeds from our #communityfarming efforts. We, the #UgandaEcoYouthsNetwork from a #youthled project, are planning to visit Nswazi community to do more #sustainablefarming work. We’re kindly asking for support seeds, tools, or funds to help us grow this #Climate. We’re also looking for someone who can help us organize a #GoFundMe to raise donations and support our mission for #foodsecurity and #YouthForChange. Let’s grow a better future together"
