  6. CW: Midsommar Probably Spoilers

I read online that some people see Midsommar as #Feminism

I saw it as the #manipulation of people by a cult. All the characters were primed by Pelle. This is, I think, revealed to us without it actually being shown.

I also wondered if the 'suicide/murder' of Dani's sister wasn't set up by Pelle and his brother. The film however doesn't give any indication that the suicide was staged. Although the tape around the victim's mouth seemed suspicions to me ...

I was surprised that people might think Christian character as only toxic masculinity. He is also a victim

I read it as both of them as being toxic in their own way. While Christian is leaving Dani hanging and not breaking up with her, she also asks a lot from him and he is initially there for her.

Because looking at it from Christian's POV, although he wants to break up, the suicide thing makes that a really shitty move and he's kinda trapped.

Christian does some shitty things, Dani also has digs at him, jumps on minor things, expecting more from him

I didn't see it as which one is the villain. I saw it more of a difficult and mutually collapsing relationship which was exactly what the cult needed to exploit

  7. I watched #Midsommar and it's really very good.

There were no surprised for me. What happens it fairly standard in 'horror' and the story structure is basically The Wicker Man.

The movie is The Wicker Man but with different things happening.

I think what is most striking is how well the audience is directed. So many scenes you are carefully directed to what to look at and even what to hear. And for that, the viewer is very much being manipulated by the cult also.

What is different to other films with manipulation stories is that we see how it happens and the characters are already ripe for manipulation. It started before the movie starts. Other movies have events happening then someone at the end saying 'This was all to my plan!' Midsommar doesn't do that. (Except maybe the maypole was rigged).

It's a fairly slow paced movie yet very economical when something important happens. So much is revealed to the viewer without it being shown. We basically know what happens to every character.

And the difficulties in the characters' relationships are really nicely done. So much is conveyed with silence. You really get a sense of how the characters know each other.

  14. #CraigMurray | The Morass of Injustice

Part of Charlotte Head’s closing speech in the Filton trial:

"If this was a shop that we’d broken into, which I would never do by the way, then you’d expect the owner to come to court. You’d expect him to list all of the items that were damaged, and describe the impact it’s had on his business. But where is Elbit? You’ve heard a very detailed and very boring inventory of the tools we brought to dismantle the weapons. You even have – behind Tab 10 – pictures with information like the brand and the weight and the material of every single tool. So where is that information about the weapons that we dismantled? If this case is supposedly only about damage, then where is the inventory?"

  24. #JonathanCook | The West’s bubble of illusion about Israel - and about itself – is finally being burst

"[T]he BBC has entirely failed to report all but one of the hundreds of clearly genocidal statements made by Israeli officials ...

It is easy to understand why. Legal authorities usually struggle to make a conclusive determination of genocide because, crucially, it depends on divining intent, which is typically hidden by those committing atrocities.

Starkly, in Israel’s case, not only do its actions in Gaza look like genocide, but its leaders have been crystal clear that those actions are intended to be genocidal ...

Once again, the British media have obligingly taken it upon themselves to shield Israel from any legal jeopardy – all in the interests of objective reporting, you understand."
