@dthompson of @spritely will be talking about Composing capability security and CRDTs, at @fosdem '26 #LocalFirst & #CRDTs devroom!
CRDTs allow for decentralized replication of data. Capability security allows for decentralized control over behavior. Local-first applications often use access-control list (ACL) security which has significant downsides versus capabilities.

The 2025 solstice-to-solstice experiment is complete and summarized! I could have made this prettier and interactive and ..., but I need to be done and feel like I got the overview I wanted, which was kinda the point of the summary. (there is some css that might get tweaked someday to fix legibility)
Some take aways (more on the site):
- granular, consistent attention shapes my existence and mindset
- my crows: Soggy, Figgy Pudding, Pantalones, Patch, Say, Lefty, Scrappy, and those unnamed — how did I miss you for 4 whole days?
- 212 species, mostly birding within 60 miles + a few excursions — abundance is here
- local first: a numbers file editable anywhere + python
-tallies: wonderful for noting the pluses

Second day wresting with PouchDB and local first setup. With more granular data types it seems quite promising! I managed to sync from offline to online and back #localfirst @couchdb @pouchdb #crdt #inkandswitch

A day spent on testing how PouchDB syncs for my habits app, to finally realize that my data shapes are not suitable for local first setup. But also I don’t want to overengineer with some CRDT solutions like Automerge, because it will complicate querying data. For now gonna try small documents approach #localfirst @couchdb @pouchdb #crdt #inkandswitch

🚀🎩 Behold, the self-important musings of Keyhive's #localfirst expedition! As they boldly go where no one has gone before, they get lost in a labyrinth of #buzzwords and navel-gazing 🎉🔍. Who knew access control could be this much fun—oh wait, it can't! 😂

For #LocalFirstConf in Berlin, I started with a live-coding talk on the Language Detector, Translation, and Summarizer API by hacking in the DevTools Console on https://local-first-conf-rocks.glitch.me/, and then showed off the Prompt API with structured output and multimodal image input.
Next, I demo'ed the Prompt API SQLite project 🪩, which is a #LocalFirst LLM with image input app that you can converse with entirely offline and resume where you left off when you reload: https://tomayac.github.io/prompt-api-sqlite/. #WebAI

Has anyone here worked with RxDB (https://rxdb.info) before? 🤔
(Have I asked this question beige? 😅)
I like the concept and it seems robust from what I’ve been reading on the docs, but something about it rubs me the wrong way.
The tracking during dev perhaps that’s not possible to turn off? The quite aggressive marketing of the premium version? The constant popups while reading the docs?
Unsure, but I’d like to hear from people who have used it, if there are any.

@kepano That's why I decided that my financial document tool Receipts for MacOS shouldn't use the cloud and should give users full control over the data they create. Financial data is sensitive IMO. In the latest beta it even synchronises data over the file system, this is the technical documentation #localfirst #fileoverapp

Is it possible to make a re-frame #localfirst app, syncing #datomic on the back-end and #datascript on the front-end? How would you do that?

On the technical side, they're implementing their app in a "local-first" way, meaning it's supposed to work even if you're disconnected from your colleagues or the internet, as far as I understand it. They're going to use Automerge (automerge.org) which is also used by the cool folks from @ethersync . It's incredibly nice to see a new generation of software being designed using tools like Automerge. Having fewer centralized tools, and more peer to peer software, sounds like a welcome change to me.
