The Ruby-throated Hummingbird incubation period ~12-14 days after laying eggs (Birds of the World). This photo is 13 days after I thought she laid the first egg, taken during a rain storm ... any day now. As a reminder, these are taken with a long lens and cropped, so the bird was never stressed.

After locating the Hummingbird nest, I "memorized" the number of steps along the trail to 'the root' that had the best tripod location (plus azimuth and vertical angle) where I could set up to focus on the nest and still be far enough away that the bird was not disturbed. The nest took about 9 days to build. During that time, she took frequent breaks to nectar up. It looked like she laid eggs soon after the nest was complete and started incubating. After that she would be found most often on the nest.

”… A bipartisan majority of Congress passed the Voting Rights Act by a vote of 77–19 in the Senate and 333–85 in the House. Dr. King and Mrs. Boynton were guests of honor as President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 on August 6. Recalling “the outrage of Selma,” Johnson said: “This right to vote is the basic right without which all others are meaningless. It gives people, people as individuals, control over their own destinies.”
And yet, on April 29, 2026, the Supreme Court gutted the protections for the Black-majority districts Congress provided for in the Voting Rights Act after years of weakening the law in other ways. In its wake, Republican-dominated southern state legislatures are rushing to redraw their district lines to dilute the votes of Black Democrats.”
