Comentaba en el resumen del 2023 que durante los últimos meses había dejado un poco abandonado el hábito de escribir por aquí, y quiero ponerle remedio con algo que podría ser interesante y al mismo tiempo hacer algo de comunidad. De un tiempo a esta parte, y en un ejercicio que posiblemente sería digno de estudio, tiendo a planear (no de manera muy estricta, tampoco se crean) mis momentos de tiempo libre en lo referente a la lectura, videojuegos, series y películas. Hace unos años me di cuenta de que muchísimas de las obras que consumía me dejaban poco o nada de poso, y del mismo modo que eliminar las calorías vacías de la dieta mejora la salud de cualquier individuo, empecé a ser mucho más selectivo con las obras a las que dedico mi tiempo.
Como cada día tenemos más y más contenidos donde elegir, tener una lista de la que ir picoteando es bastante sencillo: entre recomendaciones de conocidos, publicidad, títulos relacionados con obras que he disfrutado, etc. el número de obras en la lista crece a un ritmo más rápido de lo que mi tiempo libre me permite consumir. Además, con el tiempo me di cuenta de que tener en marcha varias obras al mismo tiempo me permite aprovechar mucho más cualquier espacio que antes solía llenar haciendo doomscrolling.
Para esta semana, tengo en marcha un par de libros: El 19 de marzo y el 2 de mayo de Benito Pérez Galdós y Microbe Hunters de Paul de Kruif. El tercero de los episodios nacionales lo tengo casi terminado, y suelo darle un buen viaje cada noche antes de irme a dormir. Microbe Hunters es un libro de divulgación sobre los científicos pioneros en el mundo microscópico. La estructura que tiene me ayuda mucho en ese objetivo de «rellenar huecos», ya que cada capítulo actúa a modo de breve biografía sobre algún científico y sus descubrimientos de manera autoconclusiva, con lo cual no es muy necesario dedicarle largas sesiones de lectura y puedes ir y volver a la obra incluso si pasan varios días sin miedo a perder el hilo.
También ando poniéndome al día con los episodios de Un libro una hora. Justo acabo de escuchar el maravilloso episodio dedicado a Miguel de Unamuno, que recomiendo al 100%.

Tonight in 1959 — Paul Douglas starred on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS (in one of his final roles).
Directed by John Brahm (HANGOVER SQUARE) and co-starring Robert Morse and Hugh Marlowe, "Touché" is a perfectly paced episode w/ a delicious twist.
Sadly, Douglas died 3 months later from a heart attack at age 52. A great talent gone too soon.

Esta semana he seguido con Microbe Hunters, lo cual me ha servido para familiarizarme con la carrera que mantuvieron Emil Behring y Emil Roux por el descubrimiento de la vacuna de la difteria.

Me gustó especialmente el método deductivo que siguieron para localizar el origen de la enfermedad, que escapando de la tónica habitual en la época, no era una bacteria sino una toxina producida por una bacteria. También es impresionante la búsqueda de métodos para debilitar la bacteria y conseguir individuos inmunes a la toxina, con la posterior creación de una vacuna cuyo principio seguimos utilizando a día de hoy.
He leído también un poco más de la mitad de Apocalipsis Suave, de Will McIntosh. Aunque la premisa me resulta muy interesante (vivir el colapso de una sociedad mientras este ocurre), la ejecución no me está terminando de convencer. El libro explora un futuro muy cercano en el que el capitalismo acaba de cargarse la sociedad humana partiendo de una base bastante realista. Introduce además ideas interesantes, como por ejemplo lo difícil que es darte cuenta de estar viviendo dentro de un momento histórico, que me recordó mucho a la historia de la rana y la cazuela con agua subiendo poco a poco su temperatura, y como esta es incapaz de darse cuenta de lo que está pasando hasta que es demasiado tarde. Sin embargo, al menos en lo que llevo leído, el autor pasa más tiempo describiendo los encuentros sexuales del protagonista (creo que lleva un ritmo de una mujer distinta en cada capítulo) que explorando ese posible futuro al que nuestra sociedad parece ir encaminada con muy buen ritmo. Me recuerda a otros títulos postapocalípticos como La carretera de McCarthy, pero varios peldaños por debajo. Veremos si es capaz de ganarme en el último tercio…

Esta semana he terminado El 19 de Marzo y el 2 de Mayo (ojo, tremendo cliffhanger se marcó Galdós, ¡en 1873!) y empiezo a ver una tónica en los episodios nacionales: la parte histórica me encanta y las escenas de acción son una delicia, pero toda la parte más novelesca (sobre Gabriel, Inés, etc.) se me hace bastante bola. No se si en las próximas entregas esa inversión en los personajes va a tener alguna recompensa, pero de momento no puedo evitar esa sensación agridulce de estar leyendo sobre un episodio histórico muy interesante junto a unos personajes que me importan más bien nada.
También he continuado con Microbe Hunters, adentrándome en las historias de Pasteur y Koch. Hubo un párrafo que me hizo reflexionar sobre una de las direcciones actuales en el campo de la microscopía:
«You’ll never convince the world about these murderous bugs until you can show them photographs,» Koch said. «Two men can’t look through one microscope at the same time, no two men will ever draw the same picture of a germ –so there’ll always be wrangling and confusion. […] But these photographs can’t lie–and ten men can study them, and come to an agreement on them.[…]» So it was that Koch began to try to introduce rime and reason into the baby science of microbe hunting which up till now had been as much a wordy brawl as a quest for knowledge

Koch realizó su investigación sobre los microbios en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, y se hizo muy famoso por descubrir los bacilos que causan la tuberculosis y el cólera, entre otros. Recibió el Nobel de medicina en 1905 (ese año en el que Einstein revolucionó la física) por sus trabajos sobre la tuberculosis, y fue el primer investigador en demostrar que una enfermedad específica es causadas por un microorganismo específico. Lo que resuena conmigo de ese párrafo, al margen de la prosa de de Kruif (ese «introduce rime and reason…» es **chefkiss** ), es la reflexión sobre la necesidad de generar resultados rigurosos (en su caso, imágenes fieles a la realidad que no dependieran de la mano de un investigador) y repetibles (dos personas deberían de ver los mismos microorganismos si hacen el mismo experimento en dos ciudades distintas). Curiosamente, a día de hoy vivimos inmersos en la moda/burbuja del uso de algoritmos de post/pre-procesado de imagen que son capaces de proporcionar imágenes totalmente distintas del mismo espécimen en sucesivas capturas o de generar alucinaciones (esto es, imágenes con detalles que no existen en la muestra). Y todo eso sin contar que muchos de los modelos utilizados actúan como cajas negras difícilmente interpretables (en ocasiones, directamente imposible).
Tengo también preparado un libro para ir leyendo en paralelo: Apocalipsis Suave, de Will McIntosh. Ya actualizaré con mi opinión en las próximas semanas.
