  1. - a modern, easy to use SIP stack for use with a modern, easy to use programming language that actually supports common protocols

while working on #pixelebbe , i failed to set up a fax service over SIP for users to fax a simple document to me.
I don't want to have to set up a whole PBX just to discover that after installing ~80 closed-source libraries it doesn't connect to the SIP-Server because that server *offers* encryption and my PBX for some reason doesn't support that.

  2. I know I asked this a while back, but I'm stubbornly going to keep at it.

There are more than a few entities on fedi that are into standing up old phone networks, ranging from military field comms, business PBXes, even homelab ESS implementations.

But I can't find a dedicated hashtag for the life of me, so I'm going to pick one and run with it.

#OtherNetworks is a great catch-all for the more esoteric, #RetroLab is broad but you get the idea, and #HomeLab is *really* broad.

    #Boost maybe? ❤️

  4. Spent some time fighting the Tandberg C60 to play nicely with #asterisk tonight, but happy to report that we got there.

It really _really_ wants to use H323, y'all, and saving certain SIP parameters via the web interface is bugged to hell (like auth?) -- you've got to jump into the CLI and set the parameters manually.

Made tweaks to codec lists on device and pbx, and we have g.722+h263p SIP calls working.

Wrapped it up with a nice custom wallpaper bow.

  8. Regent goons appointed by Gov. Abbott are responsible for this. +$77 million buyout for a lousy coach. Shameful.

Jimbo Fisher buyout leaves Texas A&M holding the bag on biggest Aggie joke of all time

Texas A&M spent millions to move to the SEC, just to pay someone millions to not coach there.

  16. @lokiwho I just spun up a new hosted #incrediblepbx instance yesterday. Only have a fanvil set and groundwire soft client registered to it at the moment.

I actually started down the #raspberrypi path initially. I had a 3CX instance running on a Pi 4B that I decomm'd last week, so that Pi was free for a new project. Then I read something about the 4B not being supported on the Raspberry Asterisk project, so that got me looking at hosted instead. I still might end up trying to put some sort of Asterisk or Freeswitch variant on the Pi though. You can never have too many PBXs...

  19. Unexpected blast from the past listening to @shanselman interview Mekka Williams. She and I both used the SL-1 language in our first jobs out of college, and we both used it to program telecom equipment.

I was a Bell Northern Research from 1979 to 1983, programming the SL-1 private branch exchange (PBX). I remember debugging by setting breakpoints using a hardware debugging card with 16 red LEDs and 16 switches to specify the address.

  20. Not sure why I'm on a fiery #SysAdminNightmares kick tonight - I blame @j 😎

So we onboarded a client who was still running Server 2000 and WinXP... Over 10Base2 Coax. ☠️ Their app worked for them 🤷‍♂️ So we rewired the entire office & upgraded their server/workstations. Gigabit Ethernet, Security Gateway, the whole works (well except the PBX because.. budget). Small office - everything was in a small alcove - it turned out nice. Server sat on a raised platform below. 1/3

  22. Today I shipped my first big change to production at my new job. Learned a lot about our dev tooling and our cloud environments along the way.

Funny. In that situation, after you’ve taken great care to do it right, and pre-checked everything, and gotten it reviewed and approved, and tried it out in lower environments… after you deploy it, inevitably the first thing you feel is surprise that it actually worked!

  23. Here's some tech nostalgia for you: "... comprehensive documentation of the original source code for the Apple II, focusing on creating a fully annotated version of the 6502 assembly code."

  25. I recently rediscovered the venerable but powerful "pudb" #Python #debugger. I think I was introduced to it at Routable.com a few years ago.

It has a design quality I associate with good tools, which is that it's immediately useful with very little RTFM, but also has significant feature depth if you want to go there.

E.g. when I use pdb/ipdb, I often do a lot of manual inspection of variables. The pudb "Variables" panel handles almost all those use cases, fast.
