  1. A message from Lidia Oskinova, President of the IAU commission G2 Massive Stars:

"Everybody is welcome to join an on-line seminar on December 1st (Monday!) at 16:00 CET

Title: What Stars Are Made Of: Celebrating One Hundred Years of Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's Revolutionary PhD Thesis

Speaker: Floor Broekgaarden (University of California San Diego)

    rediris.zoom.us/j/6313376939?p

A century ago, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin's PhD thesis, Stellar Atmospheres, transformed our understanding of the Universe. Famously described by Otto Struve as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy", Payne-Gaposchkin's work revealed that stars are composed primarily of hydrogen and helium - an insight that overturned the prevailing belief that stars shared Earth's composition.

We invite you to celebrate the centennial of this landmark achievement and to reflect on the courage, creativity, and intellectual clarity that defined Cecilia's science. [...]"

Twenty years ago, huh? Well, congratulations to Africa’s Giant Eye on the Sky! From the anniversary brochure at salt.ac.za/wp-content/uploads/

"In May 2005, the final mirror segment was put in place, completing the full 11-m hexagonal primary"

This is probably as good a time as any to share the super secret image of a (temporarily) completed mirror I took there in late April 2005?

IAU Hands-On Workshops - Call for Proposals for Workshops in 2026

The IAU calls for applications to organize workshops under the IAU Hands-On Workshops (I-HOW) initiative. These workshops aim at training early-career scientists from developing countries in accessing, reducing, and analysing the vast amount of data available in astronomical archives across the world, and using them for their research projects. Proposals to organise one of these workshops shall be submitted using the application form provided on the website by email to one of the members of the I-HOW Steering Committee.

The deadline for applications is December 31, 2025.

More information on the characteristics of the initiative, the procedure and selection criteria for workshops, and a link to the application form are available at: iau.org/Iau/Iau/Science/Traini

It was great being in #Görlitz, thanks #DZA for hosting all of us, everyone on the team made me feel welcome - looking forward to visiting again, hopefully!

  24. On the occasion of the International Annual Meeting of the German Astronomical Society, where a joint effort is happening right now to connect existing #fediverse accounts and to invite more members of the community to participate, here is a starter pack of accounts with a relation to Astronomy in Germany:

    fedidevs.com/s/NjA2/

Are you all already following each other? Did you just get started and want to ask to be included, too? Would you like to suggest further additions to the starter pack? Are you discovering accounts in the list whose introductions should get boosted around a lot more? Are astronomy aficionados out there finding this list useful?
