My advice if you're trying to start your own #mastodon isntance: USE CLOUD STORAGE! I'm specifically using #s3, but there are other options. If you end up federated with a lot of other servers you're going to be downloading a lot of media, and that will fill up your local storage quickly. Actually kinda surprised people aren't jumping into my instance @uncorking.me considering the influx of people from Twitter.
I guess the fediverse is flooded with new instances right now though, and of course there are the bigger instances that have been around for a while.

I know a lot of instances are getting pretty bogged down with users right now, so if you are looking to move to an instance without a lot of traffic mine is available at https://uncorking.me
Accounts will be approved manually to keep the server from getting flooded, but I can probably safely handle a couple hundred people.
