  1. Honored to have spent the week at in Cali, Colombia with my co-conspirators, technical collaborators, and good friends from Awana Digital. The week before, we established integration between and .

  2. A few photos from the past week in , where our team got the opportunity to learn from and support the Indigenous community on their biocultural indicators for wellbeing, and building a digital platform where they control all of their data.

  3. Quick update: in addition to the Explore interface, the main application now also uses @protomaps as a default basemap for online, and PMTiles for offline.

You can still use a Mapbox map if you want to, and offline we will ship Tileserver-GL for backwards compatibility with MBTiles for some time.

  4. At Conservation Metrics, we are building tools to get NRT change detection alerts in the hands of communities.

We are working on the auto-generation of offline map assets to use in Digital Democracy's and Open Data Kit, and maps showing before/after imagery scenes (rendered as PMTiles).

  5. With we are switching to @maplibre + @protomaps as our default map for both online and offline deployments (as well as the new public interface), meaning our software stack will be entirely FOSS again.

  6. After @foss4g, wrapping up an interesting week here at Conservation Metrics and
, implementing @protomaps PMTiles for two projects.

@maplibre + PMTiles is a game changer for the space of building offline-first FOSS mapping tech for Indigenous communities 🧵

  7. This month, Terrastories achieved a landmark that I'm really excited about!

For the first time ever, using a new feature called , some of the content that communities have been creating on Terrastories can be explored freely without needing to log in 🧵

  8. Terrastories was featured in a phenomenal video by Digital Democracy on the , with testimonies from Indigenous communities who are using among others, captured an earth defenders retreat in Ecuador. Check it out!

  9. Inspired by folks wanting to host more interactive maps on their , as well as communities who ask how they can show a about their community or territory back home in the village where there is no internet:

I created a small storytelling app that can be self-hosted and deployed offline with your own vector tiles (gzipped or not).

This example is from a storymap co-designed with the of Mount Elgon in .
