@AeonMach about 8 years ago I was doing lot of thinking about the idea of ‘sustainability’, specifically about how to meaningfully define individual sustainable behaviour. There is a back story to that, but I won’t bore you with that. But after about a year I had this lightbulb moment, realising that sustainable behaviour can’t be defined in self referential fashion (as e.g. #LNT does), because it matters if others are doing the same thing, i.e., sustainability is a function of frequency.

But I used to live in the Gt Glen and saw the scale of environmental damage done by early pumped storage schemes - #LochNess/#LochMhor at #Foyers. But not only the early ones! The #GlenDoe scheme above #FtAugustus flooded a massive basin of #peatland supporting. good breeding populations of rare waders …dunlin, golden plover & greenshank… in the #Monadhliath

@tf @outdoorsbeth @AeonMach I think you are very wide of the mark re #JMT. They are not perfect, but a hell of a lot better than majority of their privately owned ‘sporting’ neighbours. Certainly much more enlightened in their approach to partnership with communities than most of the big conservation NGO’s.
*Consider the good work they have done with communities, going right back to the Knoydart foundation buyout in mid 90’s.

The example itself is perhaps part of the issue? It does beautifully illustrate #SurvivorshipBias but does so with an example that - as you say, once genius was applied and with the benefit of hindsight - does perhaps lead people to mistakenly *think* it is somewhat obvious and intuitive? Because of the “obvious” NON-survivors in a war. It’s too neat!
There needs to be a standard less “obvious” follow-up second example! 🤔 -
