This leads into another reason why Borthwick has to go: his irrational, years-long grudge against giving Marcus Smith the number 10 jersey.
I've been going long on Marcus Smith stock since the 2023 Men's Six Nations, and in all that time his talent has mostly been squandered by being left out of the squad, or marginalised into fullback, or only brought on late in the game, and for what? What's it achieved?
What it's achieved is enabling Owen Farrell to conduct a humiliating campaign at the last World Cup, and what it's achieving now is enabling George Ford to lose his mojo in a big way.
We've got a long way to go, and in not very much time, before we can think of contending at the next World Cup. And we really do have to contend. This isn't football, where the men's team winning is a fantastical dream that has endured in spite of perennial defeat; the England men's rugby union team really is supposed to be one of the best in the world. We're one of only two Northern Hemisphere teams to reach the final of a Men's World Cup (the other is France), which we've done four times in ten editions, and we're the only one to have actually won it.
We need to start playing like it, and that means big changes are needed and soon.

Secondly, we need to be asking ourselves some serious questions about who we put on at fly-half.
And I'm not even talking about George Ford's flubbed kicks here. It was a bad day, he was having a bad day, and I seriously doubt that he's lost the ability to kick in any meaningful sense.
No, what I'm talking about is his strategic sense. George Ford's superpower is his brutal pragmatism. He has the vision to know when he should be kicking a bunch of goals, especially drop goals, the skill to execute, and the commitment to stick to a goals-only strategy for as long as necessary. That's what won us the game against Argentina in the 2023 World Cup; that's what won us the game against the All Blacks in 2025; that's the *whole point* of fielding him at all.
It is in this way that he has disappointed us a lot. He's been pulling an Owen Farrell, by trying to have it both ways when it comes to tries and goals. You have to commit to one or the other, and that's especially true when you get a penalty. Ford has a couple of times now made a choice about what to do with a penalty and retroactively established it as the wrong choice.

Three days on from the Twickenham Massacre, I have some thoughts about England.
Firstly, Borthwick must go. At the end of the Six Nations, we have to replace him. It isn't too soon; the Borthwick project has had three years to prove itself, and it just hasn't managed it.
After our barnstormer of a year in 2025, in which we came a convincing second in the Six Nations and found convincing wins against New Zealand and Argentina, I could hear the music. I was gearing up to eat an entire concrete mixer full of humble pie over Borthwick. If we had won this Six Nations, if we had won next year's World Cup under his tenure, then I would have happily admitted that I was wrong and hailed Borthwick as a genius.
But instead we've followed up one of our best years in recent times with one of our worst Six Nations performances ever. We conceded our biggest defeat to Ireland at Twickenham; we got rolled over by Scotland; a win against Italy in the next round is far from assured; and the less said about Le Crunch this year the better.
Borthwick's management just isn't working. It cannot reasonably be said to be working when we're so wildly inconsistent, when we have absolutely fuck-all idea which England is going to show up from year to year, month to month, or week to week. We have to replace him, and the absolute latest we can do that is at the end of this tournament, otherwise the new guy isn't going to have enough time to fix things in time for the next World Cup.
