Today I had the joy of another new mission in Zombies, Run! This time the villainous Amelia Spens evoked a very different response to Sam.

Today the first new missions in Zombies, Run! in more than a year were released. They’re also the first since Naomi Alderman, the game’s lead writer, became the owner of the game.
It was such a joyful experience to be reunited with Sam Yao and be back in this world, even in the bleakest of situations. Those definitely weren’t the start of tears at the corners of my eyes as I ran.

This week I had my eye on some wonderful bits of fun, in games and comics, and found some bits of hope to boost.

I saw Neon Odyssey pop up on my feed a couple weeks ago. It looked like a neat retro-futuristic TTRPG, just my sort of thing. So I looked into it.
It’s 5.5E D&D reskinned for space opera, science fantasy play with a neon-drenched aesthetic. I was in.
The species are new but some riff on classics and classes reskin all the classes from the player’s handbook with one original class.
There are seriously high production values and a no AI commitment.
What I didn’t expect from Neon Odyssey was a killer theme song.
The folks behind the project commissioned songs by Max Cruise and “Among the Stars” is an astounding earworm. I can’t stop listening to it.
Celestine even got into it and plays it now and then without my prompting.

I wasn’t familiar with Legends of Avantris before learning about their Neon Odyssey project, but now I’m at least a dozen hours into their actual play videos and will be diving into their backlog podcasts. It’s really fun D&D.

After a long year of adversity, Zombies, Run! will be launching new, beginner-friendly missions again in a 8-part story next week.
I’ve loved running with the app for more than a decade and I’m thrilled to see it starting up again under the leadership and ownership of its writer, Naomi Alderman.
If you haven’t experienced it yet, I can’t recommend Zombies, Run! highly enough. It has kept me running consistently for years.

How fitting that my paper cutter matches the HeroQuest character sheets I used it to cut out of card stock.

If your shops are like those here in Halifax, they’re run by people who love comics and games and provide important access to both in our communities. Stopping in today is a great way to discover comics and support the people who bring them to our communities.
Celestine and I stopped in for Free Comic Book Day at Monster Comic Lounge and Strange Adventures. She was happy with the comics she brought home and is excited to go again next year.

Her work on Lost in the Dark with Limitless Adventures made backing this project an easy choice.
She also released free stat blocks for two NPCs from the book to get a sense of her design approach.

In 2025 I ran more kilometers (1261) than any year since I started running consistently in 2014 after I started with Zombies, Run! I'm happy I could be more consistent this year and was especially thrilled to finally get back to doing an in-person race in September.

Today’s mission in Zombies, Run! was so Mastodon coded, with our protagonists, including a cyborg, taking a Proboscidea plush for a photoshoot in an abandoned theme park.
-
Speculative fiction writer Naomi Alderman has purchased her co-creation Zombies, Run! from the cryptodorks who had been mismanaging it for years. I was thrilled by this news when I saw it this morning.
She wrote about the meaning of her writing and owning the game in The Observer today: https://observer.co.uk/the-critics/games/article/im-a-novelist-whos-just-bought-a-video-games-company-heres-why-you-should-care-about-games-writing

This is the best news I've had in a very very long time.
My favourite app is going to live on. The miracle I was hoping for is happening.
That app carried me through some of the worst years of my life. I can't even begin to describe how happy I am to hear from Abel Township again.

@woollypigs
I'm still using #ZombiesRun. I like that it doesn't need to link to other services and works fine on its own. And the story is nice to hear!Gamification helped me a lot to start running many years ago, when I was in a sort of dark place.
Now that I've started again, ZombiesRun is like a good fellow runner at my side. -
First post on #MastodonRun 😁
A nice run into the woods after work. Gives me some boost after a not-so-nice day in the office.
It should have been a slow run at 8:00/8:30 but I seem unable to do it. I'm such a disappointmet for my training program! 😅 But, hey! I'm happy!

I've started walking to and from work, in part to be a little more active, but mainly to hear the next bit of the story in my fitness shop. You find out what happens by "playing" the "Zombies, Run!" game. You play music as you move, and it pauses your music periodically to read you the next bit of the story.
You play Runner 5 in a town in a zombie apocalypse - it's your job to run out of the town and collect supplies, and once you've finished a run you can use the supplies you found (they are picked up periodically) to vid and expand your base.
What's frustrating is that I now *really* want to spend this weekend going for a very long walk, and that's something that would have been unthinkable a few weeks ago! My legs are also telling me that they are distinctly unimpressed with all this movement...
Gamification can be used for good :)

In November I ordered the medals for Zombies, Run! Virtual races I ran in 2023 and 2024.
The package had a long, weird delay. It was handed to DHL on December 5th and then sat for a long time before being handed over to USPS. Finally, it was sent from Chicago to Montreal on February 5th. Two days with Canada Post got the package to me here in Halifax.
I'm happy to finally be able to add these to my other medals.

The final run of Zombies, Run! Season One Community Run was suitably climactic. I’m looking forward to having the focus of another community run before long. It was suitably coinciding with 10 years since I first ran with Zombies, Run!
-
The Zombies, Run! mission today was bleak and I ran with tender ribs after a tumble on Saturday while running, so I had to push through on this one.
-
Today’s re-run mission in Zombies, Run! introduced the McShell Manoeuvre and it’s namesake. With all the importance they have to the ongoing story, it felt momentous.
-
This year's autumn virtual race for Zombies, Run! is a cyberpunk story, and I'm thrilled to start running the training missions in just a few weeks.

The mission today in Zombies, Run! was to recover material for playing a TTRPG, and is the most fun to be had in the first season.
-
The late Summer combination of sun and cool air made today’s run pleasant.
-
Today’s mission brought Sam and Maxine to my ears, which probably the most nostalgic this re-run has been.
-
Today’s mission had a bit of intrigue, but I was admittedly distracted by hunger during the run.
-
The Old Mill sneaks in an emotional ending and is another of the standouts in the first season of Zombies, Run!
-
Today’s mission had me heading to Brunswick in this re-run of the first season of Zombies, Run!
-
Today the second week of the community run started, so I was dashing about to rescue a lost child from Zombies.
-
The third mission for the community run felt very familiar, as it was my fourth time running it. That feeling is what is making this revisiting fun.
-
Tasked with a super secret mission from Sam.
Whoops. I was super slack this week. Should have moved onto week 5 but only ran two of week 4.
So here is Week4 Workout 2. Good run. The free form run at the end I can almost run the whole thing. The last few Kms had alright times. #Runner5 #Run #SundayRunDay #ZombiesRun #ZombiesRun5k #5Km

Fetched medicine for Abel on my first supply run.
Week 3 / Workout 3! I was planning to do this yesterday. But oh well. It was a good run though! #ZombiesRun #5k #SundayRunDay #Runner5

Chowed down after today's run, thanks to meeting Abel's cook.
Week 3 / Session 1
This one was tough. I also under estimated how far I would run in the time given. Also had a lot more freeform running and the run drills were longer.

Dodged zombies while running tasks, much to Maxine's dismay.
Session 3/ Week 2 done!
Different route today because I wanted to explore some side streets. It was nice!

Frightened that Sam had gone rogue, but got us both back to Abel unscathed.
2/2 tomorrow will be 2/3. I’m happy for the Easter break, I can run every morning. Which will be lovely. :) #ZombiesRun #Run #5kTraining #Runner5
