  1. My biggest recommendation for a festival/event in Sapporo is the Yosakoi Soran though. That was such an exciting time in Sapporo. Performances every day, great dancers, an absolutely insane amount of dancers and overall just so fun. I loved the diversity in the music, outfits and dancing.
If you want to watch, I think the Susukino street performances are the most interesting performances due to the whole feel of them. You are close to the performances and just right on the street with all the visitors crowding the the sides. It was not even that full on the day I went, so after some time in the crowd I got close to the barrier and had a great view. As the groups are preparing in the side streets, these areas offer a great opportunity to see the costumes up close.
Another thing that was great was the U40 competition with the smaller groups. While the big groups are the most awe inspiring the smaller groups are also great. It helped that it was free and indors as this year was very hot.
The stage and parade performances are also great (although I would rate the stage ones higher), but you will need a ticket to be really able to enjoy them fully. They really take effort to make viewing it without a ticket harder. If you are early enough you can get a reasonably good view of the stage from the side area, but others also have that Idea. The ground seating is free on some of the days which was also nice, but to really be able to see the performance the ground seating is just too low. Paying for them seems not so worth it.
Watching the Yosakoi Soran is something I would even recommend as a day tour from close by areas!
(And if you can also talk to some of the performers, they are very nice people too and you can get some background info)
