@cliffle what you just made is very similar (modulo the pepper in use) to the traditional sauce of my town, #xalapa , which btw gives the name to... yep, you guessed it, the jalapeño (#xalapeño) pepper.
We call it "salsa de chile seco" (dry pepper sauce) and it's basically made of dried jalapeños.
