My favorite story was from Sarah Barrett about user research for blind and low-vision .Net developers who depend on Microsoft Learn for their job and have trouble finding the information they need. Improve the IA of the site for this audience and that will make it better for everyone!

Things to remember:
- You can't infer something about a user from name, sex, gender, pronouns or title.
- Randomize the order of your gender/sex/pronoun options so as to not suggest a "default"
- Say "Something Else" rather than "Other" when giving an open text field #WorldIADay -
Do you need the honorific to address them? Give them a list of common options, and give them a fill-in. Mx. (pronounced "Mix") is a common gender-neutral option. #WorldIADay

BUT ACTUALLY: what do you actually need? do you just need to know pronouns to customize copy? give a set of common options with radio buttons and allow them a "something else" option. show examples of pronouns to help people! #WorldIADay

If you have to ask about gender and/or sex:
- take only the data you need
- don't require a response
- explain your purpose and privacy policy (people might need to give different info depending on context)
- ask the right question

Reconsider asking about gender and/or sex for reasons of: style preferences (think about people who buy across the gender aisle!), raw curiosity, social networking, advertising, "just in case" #WorldIADay
