  1. Sixty seconds on why our Aurora Residency is such an amazing experience. Without doubt the most unique photographic workshop in the Arctic right now :)

  2. I try to keep a record of feedback received from my companions on the tours and workshops. It's hard to pick out just one, but am sharing this one for a few reasons.

It makes me so happy when my travellers "get it". When they appreciate how I design a journey and my efforts to share a passion for photography. Denise gets it. She's also a very good writer it turns out :)

    Please have a read!

  3. Here's a little "behind the scenes" from the other night. I needed one or two pictures of myself to help promote the workshop. It's so weird posing for a camera, I do my best work behind the lens instead of in front of it :)

  4. Have spent the best part of two days getting to know my website a little better. Mostly the aurora pages...

    https://ewenbell.com/itinerary-aurora.php

I've ended up making new videos for the Aurora Residency, and updating the brochure with photos from this year's workshop.

It takes more time to promote these workshops than actually run them! I'm still working through sharing photos on my website too. Wanna make some changes there. In the meantime, I feel a little less cluttered in my brain. That's a win.

  5. A couple of days ago we had a chat with Hans, who is aged 84 and still fishing. He tells me, "I'm retired, not dead." Hans plans to give up the fishing when he turns 90.

He had a few kinds of fish in his catch on this day, most of which will end up drying on the rack to make stock-fish.

  6. Got up at 3am to drive our group to the airport. Auroras were going off as we packed up the bags. Saw some moose stealing a farmer's hay on the drive. Two weeks of intense photography and sharing is now over.

These workshops push me. They force me to be the best I can be, because I don't want to let anyone down. I want my companions to get beautiful winter weather, clear nights with nordlys and a taste of the most delicious local cuisine.

I want them to come to Norway and feel like they've had an utterly unique experience that nobody else has ever had. And this workshop was just that.

Anyhoo, here's a few shots from the final daytime outing, about 24 hours ago. Feels like a lifetime ago.

  7. I have a tonne of editing to do. By which I mean a tonne of working out what is worth keeping so I can reclaim a few TB of space on the disk!

When we headed out today for a short shoot I just had my 40mm F2 on the Lumix S9. So when we came across such amazing light I had to make a panorama... so sometimes my photography is better when I get lazy.

  8. Before things got proper dark and the snow got proper busy, I managed to land a moment of calmness, shooting out across the fjord to Grov.

This is easily one of my favourite moments of the entire winter this year. Can't really explain why. It makes me feel like I belong here.

  9. These frames hopefully give you a sense of what is happening behind that scene. It's getting very dark, so there's considerable contrast between the snow flakes caught in the light, and the night around us.

I've included one shot of the jetty, which catches a smudge of light from the surrounding environs, and the volume of snow painting in the rest of the scene. I'm using a Harlowe Blade 10 propped on a $20 light stand that I bought in Kathmandu :) It's just a very clean LED light that lets me set daylight or any other temp/colour I might desire.

  10. At 4pm the snow was relentless. We had a hint of the blue hour left, and a chance to play ICM with the snow fall :)

  11. Just a quick shoot after lunch to capture some of that winter light as it moves through the fjord...

    3 hours later....

  12. Last night we took everyone up to the top of a mountain, grilled hot sandwiches over the fire and ate muffins.

And we shot some auroras too :)

This has been the best workshop we've ever run. Two decades of learned experience distilled into two weeks of adventure and immersion. It's been calm and enriching. Lovely people and a wonderful way to connect with nature and photography.

  13. It's been a golden few weeks here in The Arctic. Some days of cloud and grey, some of gold and light. We try to make the most of the good stuff, and focus on those memories.

  14. One more pic today. We set the cameras rolling on timelapse mode, then step back to enjoy some hot chocolate and just watch the show unfold. This capture was from one of the last flushes, when the ribbons danced rapidly to the north. Our entire fjord was light up with green neon.

Sharing these evenings with a great bunch of people makes it doubly special.

  15. Everyone had just gone to bed when the satellite data wiggled. Within 30 minutes we had assembled by the shores of a frozen lake and setup the cameras, and watched the nordlys unfold. Slowly at first, just a gentle band in the north.

And then it all went disco.

    #EwenInNorway #WorkshopWithEwen

Captured on the Lumix S9 with Sigma 14-24mm F2.8. Exposures were 2.5 seconds at F2.8 and ISO 4000.

  16. Maybe this was the highlight of the day. Moments before the sun retreated behind the mountains we got a chance to photograph this little fishing boat. Such beautiful craftsmanship, and a stunning location.

  17. I come from a country that is famous for being sunburnt. It's such a joy to be standing outside in the middle of the day and it's still -15°C. Winter light does magical things to a landscape.

  18. We had such a groovy day out today. From the first glimpse of sun, to the very last. This is why I love winter in Arctic Norway so much.

  19. I have a saying that "Shellie makes everything better". And these workshops are absolutely taken up a level because of her cooking. Not only do we eat better than anybody else in the entire Arctic, but we get to stay in remote locations far from the crowds.

I remember the old days of trying to run these workshops and relying on local kitchens, and the usual choice of "salmon or reindeer"... and OMG we are so lucky to have Shellie in our lives.

  20. Snowy day today so we had a photo shoot with one of Shellie favie cakes. Chocolate and Red Wine Cake :) It's a modest style of cake, but hits all the right notes.

  21. This night of nordlys was nearly a week ago, and I need to make room for a bunch more captures. The forecast for tomorrow and tomorrow night is very very clear. Gonna need a good nap and lots of charged up batteries.

  22. Snowy day today so we did some food photography and went through some of our older shots from this past week. This was a lovely little moment when the light was breaking out from under the clouds near Harstad.

I love the moments of transition, when we find ourselves with one foot in each world.

  23. Here's the final version. Cropped and punched in to show a little detail.

I increasingly get people commenting on my youtube videos with things like "nobody wants to edit photos anymore, just get it right in camera" or something to that effect. I don't believe in shooting JPG to begin with, and fundamentally that's on the basis that RAW files have more creative potential.

This whole idea of being militant against editing photos just seems weird to me. If you don't wanna dig deep into photography then you don't have to, but why leave aggressive comments for people who are exercising a little skill and artistic pursuit?

  24. Sometimes the light is a but rubbish but we keep taking photos anyway, and sometimes those RAW files totally surprise me with how much you can extract from its murky depths. Here's a before and after of this White-tailed Sea Eagle, taken from a moving boat at ISO 3200 and the 500mm end of a telephoto zoom.

Hoping to see them again on a day when the sun is with us.

  25. While waiting on the jetty this morning we got a visit from a pair of White-tailed Sea Eagles. We saw them a few times while out on the fjord, but the light was not nearly as inspiring as this moment.
