I’m about four episodes into Witch Hat Atelier, and WOW this show is gorgeous. But more than anything, what’s got me hooked is the show’s deep understanding of the emotional and interpersonal dynamics unique to a learning environment. It’s one of the things that made me absolutely latch onto assassination classroom.

In the universe of Witch Hat Atelier spells that directly act on the human body in particular are seen as unacceptable. The manga likes to present the reader with scenarios where using forbidden magic would be really tempting though, because it could solve a problem very easily, such as healing grievous wounds. Because such magic is seen as too easy to abuse, it is just outlawed entirely, despite how many lives it could save.
Imagine being trans in this universe. It's difficult to sympathize with the order of this world, knowing that it basically gatekeeps you from the one thing that would make your life a lot happier: the ability to change your body into one that allows you to feel comfortable. You bet your ass I would become a brim cap. Erase my memory all you want afterwards.

CW: why i think witch hat atelier is so popular
i think this is one of those rare stories that is both about magic, and has a magical quality. the last time we saw that happen was in 2005, when the lion, the witch and the wardrobe came out. (still the best screen adaptation of a book weve ever seen) both stories have plenty of conventions, but theyre executed in a way that doesnt feel bone-tired

Today in "financially less-than-responsible decisions": wife and I decided to buy cosplays of Olruggio and Qifrey.
Unemployed (me)? Yes.
Responsible? Never.Will I have fun with it? Will I regret? We'll find out.
The fact is that after #Japantag I kind of regretted going with a cosplay that was so much like "casual clothes with something extra", and want to go all in for a next opportunity.
On the upside, I got myself a nice jeans shirt for that cosplay, which is not something I'd have bought otherwise and I ended up liking it more than I expected.

Can't believe they gave Olruggio a northern (english) accent in the dub, but considering his backstory I suppose it's very fitting
