    Self-Titled Summer | Wild Flag (2011, US)

    And here we have our final entry in the Self-Titled Summer series, a spotlight on number 346 on The List, submitted by mfennvt. Here’s a quick rundown:

    • Point of origin(s): This indie rock band was a bona fide supergroup based on opposite sides of the US, with Carrie Brownstein (vocals, guitar) of Sleater-Kinney (et al.), Janet Weiss (drums, backing vocals) of Sleater-Kinney and Quasi (et al.), and Rebecca Clay Cole (keyboards, backing vocals) previously of the Elephant 6 band The Minders all coming from Portland, Oregon, and Mary Timony (vocals, guitar) of Autoclave and Helium coming from Washington D.C. The group played their first live show in September 2010, around the same time as the production of season 1 of Brownstein’s TV show Portlandia was going on. This s/t, Wild Flag’s debut, was released a year later.
    • Tasting notes: Fantastic indie rock; apparently the sound of an avalanche taking out a dolphin or what you get when you cross a hamburger with a hot dog (according to the band)
    • Standout track: “Glass Tambourine”, “Electric Band”, “Racehorse”
    • Where are they now?: This was the only album Wild Flag put out. They played their last show (with Mission of Burma) in August 2012, and at the end of 2013 announced they were done, primarily due to logistics. All members have continued with other projects. Soon after, Timony formed garage rock band Ex Hex. Weiss has continued with Quasi. Cole is currently a touring member of Pavement, and also has a project called Clay Cole that I believe is still active. Sleater-Kinney reformed in 2014 with both Brownstein and Weiss, though Weiss left in 2019.
