Good morning. 🌄🌅☕
11 August 2026
Yesterday I got another letter from an organization asking for a donation. This one had a few nickels glued to the paper inside the envelope. I get a couple of those now and then — I’ve even received a few with $1 bills tucked inside. And every time, I find myself wondering why they’re sending me money while asking me for money.
The nickels I sort of understand: they force me to open the envelope and peel them off before feeding the letter into my shredder. Maybe they’re trying to guilt me into sending something back. If so, it’s not working. I’ve read that this tactic is called reciprocity psychology — the idea that humans feel an urge to give back when they receive something. At any rate, it doesn’t work on me.
I donate to a few charities and causes that I either chose at random or have a personal connection to. If I responded to every letter asking for money, we couldn’t afford to live. Family comes first.
I do have a growing pile of $1 bills and nickels accumulating on the corner of my bookcase. My plan is to drop them into a charity collection box somewhere.
I just wish charities would stop sending me mail — even the ones I support. It takes time to shred everything, and the envelopes clutter up the area until I get around to it. They also send trinkets, most of which go straight into my Goodwill box. I do like the mailing labels, though; they come in handy. But even with those, I only use the ones from charities I actually contribute to.
In the meantime, I’ll keep sorting the mail, saving the nickels, and giving only where it truly matters.

White Ibis Giving Me A Stare-down
Here in LA we don't have a lot of ibises so I enjoy them when travels, birding or work or vacation, take me to where they live. In this case, the Everglades of Florida.

The Egret and the Apprentice
I took this photo in Georgia a few years back. It captures a juvenile white ibis (Eudocimus albus) and a great egret (Ardea alba) feeding together in a shallow pond.

White Ibises on the Wing
A few days ago, while Charlie and I were out exploring, I spotted two white ibises (Eudocimus albus) soaring overhead. At first glance, I assumed they were egrets, but the photo later revealed my mistake. In terms of elegance and intrigue, I’d say ibises have a slight edge in the exotic category.
Using the Force (and a bit of charm), I'm guiding you to my photo gallery at:

Young Ibis and Its Rippling World
This juvenile white ibis was one of two I spotted in Georgia—perhaps a bit outside their usual range, or just within it. I’ve returned twice since capturing this image yet haven't seen an ibis again—a curious absence.

Waters of Dawn
This image was captured about three years ago at a small, secluded pond on the outskirts of Albany, Georgia, hidden away between hotels. The original scene featured two birds: this immature white ibis (Eudocimus albus) and a great egret. However, in my mind's eye, I envisioned the ibis and the water isolated, just as they appear here.

Young Ibises in Shallow Waters
Two years back, I stumbled upon a pair of juvenile white ibises (Eudocimus albus) at a hidden gem of a pond in Albany, Georgia. Unlike their elegant snowy-white adult counterparts, these young ibises were still in their first-year plumage, which doesn’t turn snowy white until their second year. It was fascinating to watch them amidst the serene waters, showcasing nature's beauty in the making.
"White Ibises are born with brown and white streaks, and as they grow, they gradually develop their adult plumage. Typically, White Ibises start to turn white by the time they are about 9-10 weeks old, although the exact timing can vary. They achieve their striking all-white adult plumage, accented with black-tipped wings, by around 1 year of age." - Copilot

Curved Beak at Dawn
I saw this juvenile white ibis (Eudocimus albus) a couple of years ago in Albany, Georgia.
"White Ibises gather in groups in shallow wetlands and estuaries in the southeastern United States. At each step, their bright red legs move through the water and their curved red bill probes the muddy surface below. As adults, these striking wading birds are all white save for their black wingtips, but watch out for young birds that are brown above and white below. White Ibises nest in colonies in trees and shrubs along the water's edge, changing locations nearly every year" - allaboutbirds.org

White Ibis
The Ocean City Welcome & Information Center is located on a salt marsh island surrounded by trees and shrubs along the Route 52 Causeway, just off the Garden State Parkway at Exit 30 southbound, on the Stainton Memorial Causeway (better known as the Ninth Street Bridge). The parking area offers elevated views of an astonishing assortment of beautiful birds so near that one does not need binoculars to find them. The Welcome Center offers free pamphlets that will help novices identify what [...]

Circle Back
Yesterday afternoon, I was sitting outside with my wife in front of her quilting shop, when I noticed a large bird flying over. I was caught, once again, without a camera. But wait! The bird turned and circled back. I ran to the backdoor, almost tripping over Charlie, and fetched my camera. The bird was still around when I got back. It is a white ibis (Eudocimus albus) and it circled around a few times, perhaps to get its bearings then continued on.
You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.
