  1. Whether it's legal depends on whether they refrain from impersonation, and whether any content constitutes libel.

The solution is for @avilewis to publish better information, using terms Canadians are likely to search for, and telling stories Canadians are more likely to share. As a first necessary step, he and his team are overdue to stop having avilewis.ca redirect to his nomination campaign site, and immediately make it a site with far more specific information, tailored to the general election, candidly addressing everything Canadians who aren't already #NDP supporters or didn't already support #AviLewis would want to know about him.

Google, Bing, and the average Canadian voter sharing stuff on social media must be made to find that site far more relevant than the Rebel News smear site.

The profile about him on the party website is necessary but grossly insufficient. Every topic addressed on the Rebel News website, the Lewis team must cover on avilewis.ca with better information, in voter-friendly language. There are two groups to whom the language must be tailored:

    1. The blue/orange voter, including many unionized industry and trades workers in rural ridings. Most of them don't get any of the social justice issues, and have no patience for the performative grandstanding of the Liberal party, whom they see (accurately) as disingenuous elitist snobs. Explicitly diffuse divide-and-conquer bullshit by it calling that (euphemizing "bullshit" though, to avoid offending the fragile sensibilities of group 2, below). Tell of why Avi cares about issues the blue-collar types care about: not by talking at them, but by showing him listening to an learning from them, and reflecting back their concerns in practical language, tied back to economic and life (food, housing, transportation, healthcare, etc.) concerns. Examples abound from successful #WFP and #DSA campaigns to our south. (Example: see AOC listening to former Trump supporters about the data centre polluting their well water, and bringing jars of that water to Congress.)
    2. The reluctant Liberal voter, who was afraid of splitting the vote and letting our wannabe-Trump take power, who'd normally be swayed by a socially progressive message. To avoid alienating the privilege-unaware, in denial about their unconscious prejudices, in group 1, use dog-whistle social justice language: Show Avi understanding these issues and communicating about them without the trigger words Rebel News and CTV and other rightist media have tied to fabricated phobias and thought-stopping clichés. (Example: review Wab Kinew addressing social justice issues effectively as matters of human dignity, without alienating too many white rural blue-collar working-class voters through academic equity language that's often counterproductively misunderstood.)

Regarding group 2: Dog-whistle politics works in the inverse. A liberal arts postgrad understands, due to systemically prejudicially sustained demographic correlation, that when you speak of a rigged system or corporate greed, you by implication speak of white privilege, but the former, unlike the latter, doesn't alienate the blue/orange white working class. When you speaking of having "a fair shot," you indicate equity and inclusion, without using words rightist media has turned into trigger words. Similarly, "postcode discrimination" implies systemic racism (because demographics cluster geographically), and "working families" implies marginalized communities (because dual-income or single-parent households are usually marginalized by class, identity, or both).

Drinking water puts Indigenous reserves in the same political side as rural farmers downstream of coal mines. Broader messages of dignity and infrastructure, likewise. Housing security—particularly, homes for people, not for corporate speculators—puts the rural industrial worker on the same side as the new Canadian of colour who barely survived the state-sanction labour trafficking industry that was our immigration policy under Trudeau. Right-to-repair and right-to-own puts the prairie farmer the same camp as the hyphenated Canadian computer technician in Toronto. Expanding healthcare training puts the rural citizen whose hospital was closed, or downgraded to an "urgent and primary care centre" with limited hours, in the same camp as the urban citizen whose hospital is constantly overloaded.

Show Avi hearing voters' stories, listening, empathizing, and validating their anxiety or frustration, and promising to do all he can to help (while not making commitments beyond capabilities). Cut together similar stories from groups on opposite sides of divide-and-conquer lines, interleaving Indigenous and white, rural and urban, blue collar and white collar, without spelling out that you're doing so: show, don't tell. Never correct the voter's language. Empathize, reframe in your reflection while validating the underlying concern, and edit out the most offensive word choices with the appearance of an edit for brevity, not censorship. Use visual, tangible metaphors ("kitchen tables," not "discourses"). And target the oligarch, not the neighbour, as the bad guy.

After telling these stories, showing the common ground and common interests, create events to literally bring people together across those divides: Per Irvin Staub, create occasions designed specifically to inculcate positive intergroup contact. Have leaders from each group ready to facilitate and ensure exactly this outcome. Do something usefully pro-social—something practical, not merely symbolic—at each these events. Build houses. Fix infrastructure. Grow food. Start tutoring groups and fundraisers to get people from both groups into the same healthcare and trades classes. When people start cross-identifying, the divide-and-conquer strategy start backfiring against its perpetrators.

Instead of speaking of decentring, perform it: have Avi literally off-centre (in frame) and figuratively off-centre too, being the one who brings together those whom he previously listened separately, facilitating, and demonstrating servant leadership.

At local events, without committing a verbal analogue of Trudeau's costumes—”How do you do, fellow kids”—consider some code switching to the speak those with whom one's speaking (e.g., more academic or overtly social justice focused in a Students' Union event at a liberal arts campus), within limits of avoiding anything that, taken out of that context, can be used against you in other audiences. (Cory Doctorow)[@pluralistic] talks have some good examples: talking differently about the same topics to hacker conferences, gamers, and PC builders than to government officials, university faculty, and mainstream journalists.

If the real Avi Lewis website becomes more truthful, more informative, more interesting, and most importantly, more emotionally resonant, the smear site will get pushed down in search engine rankings and social media news feeds.

Meanwhile, of course: remind everyone that the Rebel News is owned and controlled by a rich corporate CEO, and backed in large part by ideologically driven wealth funds, including a lot of foreign oligarch money. American oligarchs such as the multi-billionaire Mercer family are major funders, as well as American oligarch-funded think tanks like the Middle East Forum. Ezra Levant is thus not only rich, but serving the interests of the super-rich, including foreign oligarchs: he is not on his viewers' side. He's part of the oligarchs' divide-and-conquer strategy: exactly the strategy Avi would be opposing, because it's exactly what he'll have been showing is the real cause of all the problems those oligarchs would have Canadians erroneously blame on their neighbours.

  2. #WFP to extend #Palantir contract despite concerns raised in leaked audit

The #UN's World #Food Programme is finalizing a five-year renewal of its contract with US data software firm Palantir despite “key privacy concerns” raised in a leaked 2025 internal audit.

The audit, seen by PassBlue and #FRANCE 24, reveals UN misgivings about allowing Palantir to process data for the world’s largest humanitarian supply chain

  3. Here's an important interview of @molly0xfff by @davidgerard [1]. I wonder whether any corruption-refusing #DSA, #WFP, or progressive #Democrats who've won their primaries would be willing to cite Ms. White's Tech Influence Watch [2] directly to their prospective voters.

We just saw Dr. Al-Sayed et al in #Michigan effectively make #AIPAC #corruption funding backfire. Can anyone make cryptocurrency and AI and funding backfire too?

  7. RE: hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/11672

This excellent and important interview about the legalized bribery and corruption that is the current US electoral funding system makes me wish to hear one opening line, again and again from a #WFP, #DSA, or otherwise #leftist or #progressive anti-corruption Democrat:

Who’s ready to hear me provoke another $100,000,000 of attack ads against us?

Right after that, just before getting into the promised provocation, play a quick montage of “paid for by” segments interspersed by who’s funding those PACs, and remind people how these ads attack anti-corruption candidates and support corrupt candidates based on issues unrelated to the policy the funding oligarchs care about.

Then pick a rhetorical enemy oligarch, company, or industry, and rhetorically ask how much they’ll pay to oppose you for saying this. Play it for laughter, if you can. And then say what said enemy will oppose you for saying.

  9. @benroyce @crankylinuxuser @mcnado The WFP (Working Families Party) provides a useful model of how progressive activism can make headway without splitting the Democratic vote catastrophically. The WFP selects, endorses, and supports progressive Democratic candidates. They’ve had some successes in both primaries and general elections. It’s especially powerful in states like New York that have fusion voting. #WFP #USPol

  12. @Npars01 @oldclumsy_nowmad @kevinrns @Herman @DoctorDNS In related news:

It's fun sometimes hearing how even their cultists are turning against them. Here's how a bunch of former MAGA types are talking about Donald now:
    youtube.com/watch?v=dG0C99bqahc

The creator of that video monitors far-right spaces and curates the backlash against the fash from within its former base. I find it useful to keep track of how they're expressing feeling betrayed as they become disillusioned, as I can reflect that language when talking with them.

Similarly useful is reading how gamers and PC builders comment on Louis Rossmann, GamersNexus (especially GNCA), and SomeOrdinaryGamers videos, as their audiences strongly overlap the set Musk got to vote against Harris in Nov 2024. Their anger at anti-repair, anti-ownership ("you'll own nothing"), everything-as-a-subscription, #enshittification, #ensloppification, and exhorbitant RAM and SSD prices is useful, and that language should be studied by leftist/progressive #Democrats, the #WFP and #DSA, the #NDP (in Canada), and their counterparts elsewhere.

Anyone have sources for the rhetoric they're using when they turn against Bezos or the other oligarchs they previously supported?
