Dracunculus vulgaris in bloom. These things look kind of sinister at night, lit by flashlight. That spadix, the long pointy thing in the middle, is about 2 feet long, for scale.
These plants are pollinated by flies, so to attract them, the flowers smell like rotting roadkill. It's nasty, but only lasts for half a day per flower. It's so accurate that I can always tell when they're blooming in the lower part of the yard because I see vultures circling low trying to figure out where the carrion is!
They naturalize quite readily so now I have a corner of my place that smells like roadkill for about two weeks every summer.
