It is No Spend January on the homestead.

This means-- aside from the obvious of not spending money-- that it is time to get creative with what we have in the freezers and pantries.

There is very minimal spending allowed, and it is really only if necessary for fresh produce. This is fine.

I made a batch of potato and onion soup that I have been eating through, as well as having eaten a small piece of the family's pot roast last night. Tonight, they had sausage and potatoes.

While looking through what we have, I decided to make butter with the heavy cream we had leftover from another project... which lead to the next plan of making a crusty Italian bread tomorrow that can be eaten with the soup, dipped in oil, or slathered in butter.

Not one to be known to take on an appropriate amount of projects simultaneously... homemade beef jerky is also on the menu for tomorrow. I figure the jerky is a good protein packed snack that will last for a bit, and even longer if I vacuum-pack it.

Tomatoes are not all I grow... but I will never not be surprised at how many different types of tomatoes I have when I take my seed stock at years end.

If you had a decent amount of 'fuck you' money... what would you do with it?

I want to make an intentional community on lots of land thats both wooded and able to be farmed... hopefully with a river.

I want to have a bunch of year-round yurts in the woods... all connected by wood planks. Some bigger, some smaller.

I'd want people to be able to live in some of the yurts... whether as couples, families, coliving... whatever-- and then I'd want the other yurts to be 'community room' type things. A kitchen, a dining room (maybe together), a rec room or a few, things like that.

On the farmable land, we would do just that-- animals and fruits and vegetables. We would use as much of all of our bounty as possible. The rest could be donated, preserved, composted... etc etc.

I still want an intentional community, and I want to make as much of this come true as possible. I guess I just need the fuck you money.

I have the worst sleep schedule in the world.

I also started a #rose oil steeping, to be used in making a rose #salve in a few weeks.

Oh, and I started testing my #pumpkinspice sugar scrub.

Later today, after I eventually crash out and sleep will be creating more #candles, and crocheting some dish cloths.

I spend a lot of time finding and testing recipes to sell online, at farmer's markets, and at the roadside stand I set up on my family's property in the summer.

That is in addition to other things I sell, like stickers and candles.

What are some things you would stop by and check out and consider buying, knowing it was created and produced locally?

I've already got vegetables down, anything excess from my garden I turn around and sell or give away. We also sell our chicken's eggs when we have an abundance.

But what about hot sauces? Baked goods? Home goods you could be interested in? Jewelry?

I don't intend to make a full time job out of selling these items, unless that is somehow how it pans out. Plus, being in Wisconsin, I can't just have a roadside stand up all year.

Anyone got ideas for me?

A little farm and garden update for the homies:

One of my favorite things about the #farm is that every day is pretty much a different experiment.

The mason jar filled with flowers is my attempt at making lilac oil using the #enfleurage technique. After steeping for a few weeks, it should be ready to go.

The meat photo? #capicolla! It's going to be vacuum sealed for a week, and then it shall go hang in my cellar with the #bresaola I've had hanging for two weeks now.

And the garden-- I've got everything in this photo planted except those buckets along the back wall. I'm building a raised bed for watermelons back there, but right now the buckets are back there as storage because I don't know what I'm going to use them for (or plant in them) yet. They'll probably end up going between the back fence and the big bed in the middle. If you have any ideas, let me know!

The next step aside from the watermelon bed is to finish laying cardboard out to kill weeds, and then cover it with wood chips and level everything, so it doesn't look, well, like it does in the photo.

Also, if you havent figured it out yet... I'm in my cottage core era now.

Slowly but surely, my garden for this year is coming together.

There's still a lot of work to do, but we're getting there!

Those two trellises along the back wall have been the bane of my existence for... a couple years now. I've tried them a few different places and never really liked how they looked.

My garden has always felt like it was lacking In height, so I'm hoping that training the cucumbers and tomatoes planted in front of them up, I'll get what I've been looking for.

Ignore the weeds... I'll deal with those last.

Things continue to disintegrate both with climate and politics. People are scrambling to either survive, help in some way or pretend nothing is happening. I see the stress in people everywhere. Our systems and infrastructure are maxed out and falling apart. Housing is too expensive and/or impossible to find. Jobs don't pay enough. Prices are rising across the board. Certain products are getting harder to find. Government overreach continues to escalate. Society is becoming non-functional. It's 3 steps forward, 2 back. Collapse is creeping along but inevitable, like slow moving lava.

The choice that I've made as my own way to contribute is to combine 2 households of my family into one. This may be permanent depending on how things go in the next few years. I've been a prepper for years- not the bunker, beans and bullets kind- but the kind that gather the tools, knowledge and resources to be self-sufficient not only in times of local difficulties but also for possible wide-spread failures due to extremes in climate, government, war, or natural disaster.

The range of skills and abilities in my household just quadrupled. I will now live with a disciple of Xin Yi Lui He and other related traditional martial arts (methods of defence), spinning, weaving, most fibre and fabric arts, infection control, building skills, skills to compliment my own gardening and land use. Along with everything I do and have learned over the years, we have a better chance at thriving together. My house is going to be louder and messier, but stronger and more efficient at everything.

We are officially six weeks from May 1st, here in SE Wisconsin. That means 8 weeks to last frost.

I am absolutely thrilled to have started my plants as early as I did. It gives me time to get them bigger and stronger, as well as do a second sowing of anything that does not do well, or anything I want a second plant/second planting on.

This weeks goals are to get my 4-6 week seeds planted, and get some of my cold hardy plants outside.

On top of that, I have another raised bed to build (8x4x1), trellises need to be moved and/or placed, the ground needs to be mulched, and I need to finish weeding what I can.

Planting/garden/farm season is about to be in FULL SWING and I couldn't be more excited.
