Ian Rankin - A Question of Blood

Like Agatha Christie's best whodunnits you have no clue until the very end. Then all of a sudden it makes sense. Kinda sorta.

Very well written, but too many clichés to score really well.

Hubert Lampo - Hermione betrapt

Inmiddels is Lampo echt een schrijver uit een verdwenen tijd, waarmee hem lezen ook wel werken is geworden. Zoals TV-series uit de jaren '60 uiterst traag zijn geworden, neemt Lampo de vrijheid voor zinnen als:

"Alleen opdat hem, door het bloed en meer subtiele geleidera aan hen verwant, op een zonnige septemberdag in Parijs, het voorrecht te beurt zou vallen de dubbelgangster van zijn eersbeminde tot tranen toe bewogen te zien voor Jan Van Eyck's zwangere Arnolfini-bruidje, de herders van Hugo Van der Goes met hun trage gedachten achter het lage voorhoofd, het magische meisjeskopje van Petrus Christus of de zinnelijk-kuise Bathesba van Hans Meling."

Je moet er van houden om ze weg te kauwen.
Dat doe ik.

De inventieve beeldspraken, de dialogen die altijd vaag en half begrepen blijven en natuurlijk de vermenging van realisme en fantasie, inclusief cameo's van Johan Daisne en Hunert Lampo zelf.

Ik smul ervan!

Het enige minpuntje imho is het happy end, de kans voor een tragisch einde werd helaas niet opgepakt.

Maar al met al een heel fijn boekje.

Emma Newman - Planetfall

Another reread per audiobook, and again the first reading was prompted by "Worlds Beyond the Margins": 'a book with a MC with a mental illness' (or was it even 'MC with anxiety disorder' ?).

Renate Ghali, Ren, is the 3D printing wizz of a colony at the foot of 'God City' on a planet revealed to her best friend when she was in a coma. And Ren suffers from 'worry thoughts' and compulsory behavior.

This makes her for me one of the most interesting and endearing main characters in Science Fiction. I admire her so much and suffer with her as she meets cruelty in the hell that are others.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I do recommend this to anyone who is or knows someone struggling with the issues mentioned above.

No complaints at all? Well I do think the ending is not as strong as the rest of the book.

The first time I read them it was prompted by Goodreads best reading group "Worlds Beyond the Margins". Glad to have left that Amazon-tainted app, but I really miss that group with the amazing collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy books that are marginalized in one way or another.
(The prompt was 'a book with a non-human MC', if I remember correctly).

If you're looking for shattering of perspectives, or worldclass literature you might be disappointed by all the 'dei ex machina' and the lack of solid explanations of technological possibilities.

But if it is entertainment you're looking for and you like Science Fiction, you will probably like these books. There is excitement, humour and reflection on what it means to be (non-) human.

Moudhy Al-Rashid - Between Two Rivers, Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History

This is a brilliant book, easily living up to the praise cited on it's cover.

After an introduction the book has 9 chapters starting from a specific archeological find and an epilogue.

If you want to know if you will like this book, thumb to the epilogue and read that in your bookshop of choice.

Al-Rashid clearly states what she wants to share: that we are all experiencing the same deeply human lives even though we are separated by thousands of years and (for me certainly) thousands of miles.

She does this in a wonderfully engaging writing style, making herself part of the story by sharing her personal experiences that connect her (and us) to those people who lived when so much was new: writing, astronomy, the pottery wheel, iron weapons, wage gaps and borderwars.

V.S. Naipaul - Een bocht in de rivier.

Salim, de hoofdpersoon, is iemand die je niet als vriend wil hebben, maar vooral iemand die je niet wil zijn. Een bange -en laffe- egoïst, niet bijster snugger en zonder veel zelfreflectie.

Desondanks ziet hij sommige dingen scherp. Hoe iedereen uit is op ‘goud en slaven’, maar de witte kolonisatoren willen daarnaast nog standbeelden voor hun hoge moraal. Die verwacht hij niet. En misschien is dat iets wat eraan bijdraagt dat ik hem niet echt ging haten. Salim heeft ook geen hoge pet op van zichzelf.

Ik las het in het kader van een literaire kannibalisme challenge. Maar anders dan bij ‘De Wijde Sargasso Zee’ en ‘The Moursault Investigation’ is de link met ‘Heart of Darkness’ -waarop het zou kannibaliseren- minder direct. Ze delen geen hoofdpersoon.

Wat ze delen is de locatie, de racistische vooroordelen, het constante en achteloze geweld en uiteindelijk ook ivoor. Maar vooral delen ze de overtuiging dat het nooit wat zal worden, daar aan de rivier.

Joseph Conrad - The Heart of Darkness

A novella that took me just as long to read as a book three times as thick.

The story and style made it necessary for me to stop reading after a few pages. Like the old steamer struggling upstream, I was pushing myself on, wrestling Conrad’s prose.

The darkness oozes out of his words, tainting Kurtz then Marlow, then the writer and also the reader. Which is of course, exactly how it is. Racism and colonialism are still poisoning the wells that feed the fountains from which Europeans drink.

Although it is written in disgust, I think the book is still deeply colonial in a ‘manifest destiny’ kind of way. Never did I get the feeling that someone thought it could or even should be different.

Nihilist disgust in a painfully difficult style - Heart of Darkness is a black metal album in prose.

Deserves its ‘classic' status and I do recommend reading it. I hope to reread it one day.

Paoloni and I are from different places. He is a “qualified marksman in the Australian army” - I have a conscience certified by the Dutch state. He will never be caught “writing anything that's ultimate nihilistic or defeatist.” You will catch me enjoying stories like that.

The dark tale it apparently was as a first draft, is still in there, but it has been edited, cheared up. Eternal love and hope is sprinkled over it, because literary diabetes is not to be feared.

He does write engaging prose however. The tension he builds up when isolation is pressing on the crew makes for a captivating read that had me thinking about Scott and Amundsen more than once. Nicely done.

Still in the end I think this book is first and foremost a missed opportunity.

"Elk ongelukkig gezin is op zijn eigen manier ongelukkig" (Tolstoj)

Antoinette Cosway, de eerste mrs. Rochester uit Charlotte Brönte's Jane Eyre, is daar geen uitzondering op.

"Geen slavernij meer [...] Mij stemde dat niet treurig. Ik had geen herinnering aan betere tijden" zegt (denkt?) ze als ze het over haar vroege kindertijd heeft als 'witte kakkerlak' op Jamaica.

Vanaf dat moment al grijpt het verhaal je vast en sleurt je mee een andere tijd en plaats in.
Door de wisselingen van perspectief, van innerlijk en openlijk, van werkelijkheid en dat andere wordt het allemaal pijnlijk helder gemaakt.
Mensen werden op heel andere en toch precies dezelfde manier worden vermorzeld als hier en nu.

Wat een geweldig boek!!

Jean Rhys - De wijde Sargasso zee

Marwahussain's inkpotandpages’ 2026 Literary Cannibalism Challenge is reading 12 decolonial books that cannibalize on 'western classics'.

This month I want to read Jean Rhys.- Wide Sargasso Sea and V.S. Naipaul - A Bend in the River responding, adding to, changing perspective of Jane Eyre and Heart of Darkness respectively.

But while 'classic' does mean 'know of it, could say something about it'; it certainly does NOT mean 'I have read the book from cover to cover'.

Jane Eyre & Heart of Darkness are examples of that kind of 'classicality'. So for me the challenge is really reading 24 books. Which makes it even better ofcourse.

Mariasha Pessl - Calamiteitenleer voor gevorderden

Om de zoveel tijd heb je een film of boek dat intellectuelisme promoot en desondanks zeer succesvol wordt. Ik denk aan de film ‘Dead Poets Society’ in 1989 en Donna Tartt’s The Secret History van 4 jaar later. ‘Calamiteitenleer voor gevorderden’ nam het stokje over in 2006.

Maar zoals iemand me met betrekking tot een TV-serie eens aanprees met ‘de eerste twee seizoenen moet je er inkomen, maar dan wordt het echt goed’, zo zou mijn compliment aan dit boek hooguit kunnen zijn dat het na zo’n 300 bladzijden ook echt wel spannend wordt.

Helaas ben je dan al helemaal murw gebeukt door de overdreven stijl -denk aan roccoco, maar op de plaats van elke krul een toelichting als deze (of een literatuurverwijzing (Sewer Pirouette (2026))- die ik slechts één alinea volhoud.

Net genoeg thriller om uit te lezen, maar dat komt ook omdat ik momenteel heel veel tijd heb.

Mariasha Pessl - Calamiteitenleer voor gevorderden

Om de zoveel tijd heb je een film of boek dat intellectuelisme promoot en desondanks zeer succesvol wordt. Ik denk aan de film ‘Dead Poets Society’ in 1989 en Donna Tartt’s The Secret History van 4 jaar later. ‘Calamiteitenleer voor gevorderden’ nam het stokje over in 2006.

Maar zoals iemand me met betrekking tot een TV-serie eens aanprees met ‘de eerste twee seizoenen moet je er inkomen, maar dan wordt het echt goed’, zo zou mijn compliment aan dit boek hooguit kunnen zijn dat het na zo’n 300 bladzijden ook echt wel spannend wordt.

Amadou Hampāté Bā - Jawel, commandant In het voetspoor van de vertellers

Het tweede deel van zijn memoires eindigt Amadou Hampāté Bā, die zeker 90 is geworden, rond zijn 33ste, als hij zijn spiritueel leermeester Tierno Bokar verlaat om als ambtenaar in Bamako te gaan werken.

De stijl blijft vriendelijk vertellend vanuit een wijs hart: "Generalisaties, op welk gebied ook, weerspiegelen nooit de werkelijkheid".

Alhoewel hij dus mild van toon blijft -te mild, gok ik, voor dekolonisatie denkers- komt in dit deel de afschuwelijke praktijk van kolonisatie wel meer aan bod. Hij beschrijft het, maar op zo'n toon dat het prettig lezen blijft voor (het nageslacht van de) kolonisatoren. Ik weet niet precies wat ik daar van vind, behalve dan dat alleen de memoires van Bā imho onvoldoende zijn voor een begrip van zelfs alleen de geschiedenis van West-Afrika.

Maar het boek bevat veel pareltjes van wijsheid. Kritiek op macht spreekt mij natuurlijk altijd aan, dus het spreekwoord "Macht graast geen gras, macht eet mensen" blijft me bij, net als een les van Tierno Bokar: "Amadou, denk niet dat macht ooit één nacht heeft doorgebracht met waarheid en recht".

Zo is het.
Ook 100 jaar later en 6.000 km noordelijker.

Isaac Asimov - The End of Eternity

A 70 years old Science Fiction story shows its history, which for some reason I find doubly entertaining in a time travel story. The punchcard like computer communications for instance.

Asimov’s characters are just there to carry the plot, which is a logical puzzle of sorts. And although a lot of the novel is inside the frustrated mind of Harlan, the protagonist of the novel, I never felt that this story is any different. The emotions -frustration mostly- were more annoying to me than that it helped to turn Harlan into a person. He stays one of the 2-dimensional male boarding school type nerds that run the universe.
Another sign of the times perhaps.

So why did I still enjoy this story enough to re’read’ it after 37 years? Well for the staggered layers of plot twists ofcourse! The characters might be cardboard but they take you through a wonderful spiral of reality changes and paradoxes.

In dit eerste deel van zijn autobiografie begint Amadou Hampāté Bā met de geschiedenis van zijn voorouders en eindigt als ie als jonge ambtenaar onderin de hiërarchie van het Franse koloniale systeem naar Ouagadougou wordt gestuurd.

Bā is blijkbaar een groot redder van de West-Afrikaanse orale traditie, maar dit was het eerste boek dat ik van hem las. Maar ik kan het me wel voorstellen, zoals hij schrijft: heel soepel precieze observaties aan elkaar rijgen zonder ooit langdradig te worden. Heel prettig lezen.

Het Afrikaanse perspectief op de wereld uit 1900-1920 is mij natuurlijk helemaal vreemd.
Maar veel plaatsnamen ken ik wel uit verhalen van mijn broer die lang in West-Afrika woonde en nog vaker werkte. Aspecten van de cultuur die Bā beschrijft, herken ik van vrienden uit het savannegebied ten zuiden van de Sahara. Dit maakt samen met de schrijfstijl dat het nergens 'vreemd' voelt, juist eerder vertrouwd. Zoals mijn tante me ook eens een middag vertelde over onze en haar geschiedenis.

Leon Trotski - Fascisme, wat het is en hoe het te bestrijden

Klassieke bundel* van Trotski over het fascisme, hoofdzakelijk geschreven ten tijde van de vorige keer dat het in Europa de overhand kreeg.

Doordat de teksten voor WO II geschreven zijn, wordt de analyse overtuigender.

Trotski legt inderdaad uit wat fascisme is en doet dat op een heldere manier. Dat is wel eens verfrissend in deze tijd waar het is doodgeanalyseerd door historici, liberalen, psycho-analytici, literaire figuren enz enz.

Hij is ook helder in hoe het bestreden moet worden. Deels ben ik het met hem eens (fasco's slaan - kan gewoon) Deels niet. Hij blijft de revolutionair marxist van voor de bullshitbanen die nu een groot deel van de werkende klasse ketenen. Bovendien heb ik het niet zo op revolutionaire voorhoedes. Ik leid mezelf wel, dank u.

De uitgever voegt er een woord vooraf aan toe van 18 pagina's wat aan de ene kant zinvol is (de historische schets) aan de andere kant -meer dan een kwart van de bladzijden zijn nu niet door Trotski geschreven.

“What I am is the Indian who can’t die.
I’m the worst dream America ever had.”

Set mostly in the final stages of the genocide that birthed the empire of blood, the horrorstory Graham Jones has crafted is great writing.

I won’t spoil but heaps of praise and highly recommended.

Even to people who are not into supernatural horror. Because in a way, from a certain perspective it is no supernatural horror, but a true crime story of that despised empire.

Chang-Rae Lee - On Such a Full Sea

Open ended, so in a sense the story leads nowhere. Besides that the structure is quite distinct. It’s like the writer had a couple of dystopian tableaus developed and then thought of a way to connect them. It works, but it creates a curious rhythm of slow very detailed parts and quite fast moving connecting parts

This might be the reason I relistened this book again.

In the tableaus Lee creates opportunities to write things that make me think. Like you're most likely to fail when you are closest to finally satisfying a desire as in that moment you are the furthest removed from yourself.

Really liked this, but can’t say I would recommend it to everyone.

Johan Egerkrans - Norse Gods

The stories I know well are once again retold. Not in a particular spectacular way.

This is more than compensated by the illustrations, the reason for this book. They might be overly romantic to some, they are to me every now and then, but they are gloriously beautiful in their romantic excess.

Kamel Daoud - The Meursault Investigation

What if your brother was killed. Shot on the beach on a searing hot day. What if this happened to you when you were still a boy in a single parent family without other siblings.

The brother-formed-gap might become the black hole around which everyone and everything in your life revolves.

And then to find out that the murderer has written a novel in which you get to know his soul ‘like you were an angel’ but in which your brother’s name is not even mentioned. Musa Uld el-Assas, your brother, reduced to a stage prop called ‘The Arab’.

“The whole world knew the murderer, his face, his look, his portrait, and even his clothes, except the two of us! The Arab’s mother and her son [...] Two poor, pitiful natives who had read nothing and put up with everything. Like donkeys.”

Kamel Daoud answered Camus brilliantly, I think. Mirroring the story of Meursault, not too forced, not too loose and touching the mirror at several points.

This being said, a feminist rewrite would be great.

Merryn Dineley - Barley, Malt and Ale in the Neolithic

In the six chapters of this thesis Dineley argues convincingly that:
• It is possible to brew a decent ale that holds good for months with techniques available in the Neolithic
• The material culture pattern for brewing activity can be established in prehistory from the fertile Crescent to Orkney
• Women were the very first grain cultivators and processors and with their knowledge of ritualized skills held positions of status and significance.
• Neolithic ‘rectangular wooden buildings’ can be reinterpretated as the places where grains were processed into malt and ale. That these burn down every now and then is also explained without need of the -imho ludicrous- hypotheses of ritual burning of so many buildings.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thesis, it is well written and balanced.

Albert Camus - De Vreemdeling

De vacuümcatastrofe is het verschil tussen het empirisch vastgestelde en het theoretisch berekende niveau van de vacuümenergie, de energie van de lege ruimte.

Hier moet ik aan denken bij het lezen van ‘de vreemdeling’.

Een studie van leegte waarin op één moment een gruwelijke, catastrofale daad plaatsvindt. Zonder beweegredenen, zonder oorzaak. Ervoor en erna strekt het niets zich uit. Camus beschrijft het op een manier waar ik erg van houd. De afgemeten zinnen doen me aan Bordewijk denken. Dat is altijd fijn.

In ‘The Meursault investigation’ wekt Kamel Daoud het slachtoffer ‘de Arabier’ tot leven. ik kijk ernaar uit het te lezen in het kader van de literair kannibalisme challenge.

Iain M Banks - Feersum Endjinn

Not his best.

Iain M. Banks has a fantasy that now and the spirals almost out of control right into the trippy levels of scifi. When that is DMT-ish (short and very weird) I love it. Unfortunately Feersum Endjinn is more like taking just too little LSD - it works very long, but the weirdness stays just above 'base reality' ;-)

If you want scifi about people uploading themselves, try Greg Egan - Diaspora. If you want Banks' scifi (re)read the Culture novels. I know I will.

David Miles - The Tale of the Axe How the Neolithic Revolution Transformed Britain

"I tried to produce an approachable account for an interested General reader” writes David Miles in his afterword. For me, he has succeeded.

The book tells the story of the progress of agriculture from one of its starting points in the Levant (agriculture has arisen independently in a dozen places around the world) towards Britain. This Neolithic Revolution also brought about the megalithic monuments from Göbekli Tepe to Stonehenge.

It is based on the latest (in 2015) archeological insights and combines an approach over a long time and a wide geographical range into a synthesis that is amazingly easy to read. Sometimes Miles is downright funny, I literally lol’ed a couple of times while reading. A rare phenomenon while reading an archeology book.

I caught a few editorial oversights, e.g.:
• On p. 293 'were late arrivals in the evolving cycles of stone shifting and earth moving' is used twice in a paragraph.
• On p.322 Maeshowe & Newgrange are aligned on midwinter sunset, while on p. 371 Newgrange aligned on midwinter sunrise.
And I disagree with some wording in his epilogue. But that is nitpicking, I really enjoyed this book!

David Miles - The Tale of the Axe How the Neolithic Revolution Transformed Britain

"I tried to produce an approachable account for an interested General reader” writes David Miles in his afterword. For me, he has succeeded.

The book tells the story of the progress of agriculture from one of its starting points in the Levant (agriculture has arisen independently in a dozen places around the world) towards Britain. This Neolithic Revolution also brought about the megalithic monuments from Göbekli Tepe to Stonehenge.

It is based on the latest (in 2015) archeological insights and combines an approach over a long time and a wide geographical range into a synthesis that is amazingly easy to read. Sometimes Miles is downright funny, I literally lol’ed a couple of times while reading. A rare phenomenon while reading an archeology book.

I caught a few editorial oversights, e.g.:
• On p. 293 'were late arrivals in the evolving cycles of stone shifting and earth moving' is used twice in a paragraph.
• On p.322 Maeshowe & Newgrange are aligned on midwinter sunset, while on p. 371 Newgrange aligned on midwinter sunrise.
And I disagree with some wording in his epilogue. But that is nitpicking, I really enjoyed this book!

In the Culture novels Iain M Banks introduces technology so advanced that I would need his command of superlatives to try to describe it. As a consequence his Science Fiction is 'soft' with respect to the tech side.

What makes me coming back to his novels is 'cultures' - the interaction of different species with different levels of capability, different views of the universe and different goals. Individual 'humans' are used as the canvas for Bank's sketches and paintings of those interactions.

Add to that a very pleasant reading voice and you get an audiobook that I will probably relisten once more in the future.

Dennis Bos - Bloed en Barricaden De Parijse Commune herdacht

Dennis Bos ken ik als een geweldige spreker. Hij barst van de feitenkennis, en kletst die feiten op een heel prettige manier aan elkaar. In dit boek past hij dezelfde stijl toe, maar word zijn kracht ook een zwakte.

Uitweiding volgt op uitweiding. In het begin amusant, na verloop van tijd vooral vermoeiend. 
Na de naamgever van het masochisme er al de haren bijgesleept te hebben, volgt na een boekbespreking 'de hyena's van de Commune' een paragraaf die ingaat op het leven van de gevlekte hyena. Hier had een strepende redacteur het boek beter gemaakt. 

Het boek begon me hierdoor tegen te staan. Tot ik me bedacht dat het ook door mijn manier van lezen kwam. Ik las het alsof ik een plot verwachtte, elke dag tientallen bladzijdes. Maar 'Bloed en Barricaden' is geen roman. Het is een lange monoloog, die je kunt opdelen in brokjes die je zelf goed te verteren vind.

Zo las ik het boek uit. Een uurtje of zo las ik wat Bos te zeggen heeft, om vervolgens het boek een paar dagen te laten liggen. Op deze manier werd het weer een heel vermakelijk en interessant verhaal vol met feitjes en anecdotes. Maar dat verhaal had best 100 pagina’s korter mogen zijn

We'll see what March brings, my guess is a bit more archeology, and hopefully a start with the best challenge of the all: the literary cannibalism challenge!

Ooh man, how to review this book...

Up until the explanation of wormholes I really really loved this, that explanation sucked imho, but then it became better again, until it started to speed up and spiral a bit out of control.

And as always with SF that enters non 3-dimensional spaces, this book left my brain spinning inside my head.

If you like your SF hard, just below diamond-level, try this writer and this book. Let's keep it at that.

Zag dit vanmiddag in de boekwinkel in Dokkum en het leek me een leuk boekje om wat Fries mee te leren.Helaas is mijn Fries veel te slecht en vooral te passief om een recensie in het Fries te schrijven.

De geschiedenis over de bloedige slag bij Boksum van 17 januari 1586 wordt verteld via de ogen van drie drankzuchtige ex-studenten die van de Universiteit in Franeker zijn getrapt.

Veel leuke visuele grapjes en het Fries was voor mij goed te volgen. Zal het boekje nog eens herlezen en elk onbekend woord en gezegde opzoeken.
