  1. Timbuk 3, Greetings From Timbuk 3, 1986 on I.R.S. Records

Debut album from Pat MacDonald and Barbara Koyman MacDonald, the husband and wife duo better known as Timbuk 3 (sometimes written Timbuk3), featuring their most well known single “The Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades.”

Such great songwriting on this and all their albums – people sometimes think of them as a one-hit wonder but really there are a ton of great songs on all their albums – well worth picking up if you come across them.

My copy—again via Vinyl Destination in Lowell MA—is an early pressing from MCA Gloversville, with the lyrics sheet but without the custom I.R.S. Records inner sleeve.

  2. Haircut One Hundred, Pelican West, 1982 on Arista

The debut album for UK New Wave band Haircut One Hundred, founded by Nick Heyward, Les Nemes, and Graham Jones, joined here by Blair Cunningham on drums. Lead single “Love Plus One” was a top 10 hit in the UK and a top 40 hit in the US.

The LP was produced by Bob Sargeant and recorded at Roundhouse Studios in London.

My copy—via Vinyl Destination in Lowell MA—is an early US repressing with the track title of A5 corrected on the label.

  3. Bruce Cockburn, Waiting for a Miracle: Singles 1970-1987, 1987 on True North

Collection of singles from Canada’s Bruce Cockburn, whose career ranged widely from folk to what we might call world music to rock. Cockburn was a Berklee School of Music dropout before being a dropout from Berkelee was de rigeur.

I first found Cockburn via “If I Had A Rocket Launcher” and his association with various activist musicians in the 80s. He also worked with T-Bone Burnett on a few albums in the 80s.

True North is an independent Canadian label (founded by Bernie Finkelstein) with distribution by CBS and they still put out Bruce Cockburn’s music.

My copy—via VInyl Destination in Lowell, MA—is a Canadian pressing by CBS Records Canada from the Don Mills Ontario plant.

  4. The Honeydrippers, Volume One, 1984 on Es Paranza

Robert Plant’s early 80s group dedicated to reproducing the sound of R&B, which had a big hit with a cover of “Sea of Love.”

The title, Volume One, turned out to be aspirational as it was their only LP.

The lineup, however, includes (in addition to Plant): Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Paul Shaffer, Nile Rodgers, Wayne Pedzwater, Dave Weckl, Brian Setzer, and Keith Smith.

My copy—via VInyl Destination in Lowell, MA—is a 1984 pressing from Speciality Record Pressing. Love this version of the labbel.

  5. The Alarm, Change, 1989 on I.R.S. Records

We recently lost Mike Peters of The Alarm, after a 30 year battle with cancer. He also had a lengthy solo career following the band’s breakup in the early 90s, and founded the Love Hope Strength Foundation.

This album was their penultimate with the original lineup, and has NID YN CYMRU AR WERTH carved into the runout (“Wales is not for sale”). They also released simultaneously a version in Welsh called Newid.

My copy—via Vinyl Destination in Lowell MA—is a US pressing from 1989. The cover is die cut (ALARM on the front, CHANGE on the back) such that the inner lyrics sheet (which wraps around the printer inner) shows through.

  6. Junior Walker and the All-Stars, Anthology, 1974 on Motown

While many folks only know Walker and the All-Stars via their first and biggest hit, “Shotgun,” this 2xLP release collects recordings from 1965-1973 – good way to get to know more of their catalog.

Motown issued a whole series of Anthology releases in the mid-seventies – mostly 2xLP releases of collections from their best selling artists – and I’ll grab them whenever i find them in good shape at a reasonable price. (Record store owners and collectors sometimes have a preference for all the original records rather than these collections – but I enjoy them).

  7. Joe Jackson, Look Sharp!, 1979 on A&M

Joe Jackson’s debut full length, with “Is She Really Going Out With Him?,” “Fools In Love,” and “Sunday Papers.” Love this iconic cover photo by Brian Griffin.

Recorded at Eden Studios in London, with the band including Graham Maby, Dave Houghton, and Gary Sanford – produced by David Kershenbaum.

My copy is a promotional pressing via Vinyl Destination in Lowell, MA

  8. Paul McCartney and Wings, Band on the Run, 1973 on Apple Records

The third Wings album, this time credited to Paul McCartney & Wings. Includes the title track, plus “Jet” and “Let Me Roll It.” This lineup includes Denny Laine, and Linda McCartney (as you see on the labels) but also Ginger Baker and Remi Kabaka on percussion, and Howie Casey on Saxophone.

My copy is a 1973 pressing (the US version, with “Helen Wheels” which was not on the UK pressings), via Vinyl Destination in Lowell MA.

  13. Jeff Beck, Blow By Blow, 1975 on Epic

Jeff Beck is a guitarists’ guitarist – constantly named by other greats as one of the greatest but not given quite the same public acclaim.

This 1975 album – orchestrated, arranged, and produced by George Martin – has two Stevie Wonder songs (“Case We’ve Ended As Lovers” and “Thelonious”), a Beatles cover (“She’s a Woman”) as well as joint compositions by Beck and members of the backing […]

  19. James Taylor, One Man Dog, 1972 on Warner Bros.

This was Taylor’s fourth studio album, with “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” 18 tracks means lots of short bits / interludes, some of which can feel a bit unfinished but overall I like the effect.

Performers include Carly Simon and Carole King on backing vocals, Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and John McLaughlin (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) on “Someone.”

  24. Steely Dan, Katy Lied, 1975 on ABC Records

  25. Joe Cocker, Mad Dogs and Englishmen, 1970 on A&M

Technically the soundtrack to the live movie of the same name, a sprawling live set with a tremendous band including (led by?) Leon Russell, across rock, soul and R&B. If you can only have one Joe Cocker album this probably ought to be it.

Great renditions of “Cry Me A River,” “Bird on a Wire,” “Feelin’ Alright,” and “Delta Lady.”
