As a nonbinary trans person I love trans representation, but Veilguard's nonchalant inclusion of nonbinary people still bugs me. Because it's like... *where* did Harding learn what a gender fluid person is? It doesn't seem like there's a vibrant queer culture in the DA setting like there is IRL, and modern queer terminology is the product of decades of queer culture. It's like the identities exist, but none of the surrounding cultural context does.

Tailbone fracture makes it hard to sit, so I'm laying on the couch playing console games. Figured I might as well give #DragonAge #Veilguard another chance. Love Harding and Neve, but jeez, facial and body animations during cutscenes in this game are terrible. Don't think I can handle more than half an hour a day of this.

Got 2 hours into my Veilguard playthru, met Morrigan and realized I had completely fucking forgotten to customize the "past choices".
That really needs to be a whole screen on the CC, not just a button, easily missed.

So I finally finished playing #DragonAge #Veilguard the other day, on my highly non-standard setup.
Pretty fun, liked the fact that you got to make friends with the supporting NPCs. Might like to play again some time... but only on very different hardware that's, you know, actually above min spec.

I love everything about this post. A friend of mine sent it to me and it had me laughing. In a good way, of course.
I've always either imagined Peter Cushing or Christopher Plummer as our dear Regis. It's a toss-up between the two of them, I swear.
What's even wilder is that said friend sent me another post where one of the game developers commented and basically confirmed that they had Peter Cushing in mind for Regis. That blew my mind. And it's funny because now that's two characters I adore... Emmrich was created with him in mind as well. 🔥

Replaying #DragonAge: Origins, got to the Brecilian Forest and the codex entry about Fen'Harel the Dread Wolf. After having played the #Veilguard and knowing the other side of that story, I can really taste Solas' bitter resentment.
This has the feels of revisiting "Gone with the Wind" after the "The 1619 Project," or Soviet and Russian versions of history of #Belarus after Uladzimier Arlou's books.

At least there are no weird random spirit boats taking you around to various disconnected fantasy spaces. Maybe my fantasy is too western canon literalism, but I yam what I yam in terms of growing up on D&D red box, Ultima, etc.

I think having more continuity of biomes really helps with verisimilitude as well, it's very game-y to have such crazy distinctions of zones that are "adjacent" in game space, even if they are separated by a good deal of space on a world map. But that world map is a lie for establishing a working gameplay space in an open world game.

In the end I care more about exploration and sense of world so Avowed takes it.
I find the desire to make such fully distinct biomes a weird one. Oblivion and Skyrim’s approach to these is so much more subtle and enjoyable vs the FOREST SWAMP DESERT LAVA partition that Avowed followed. Plus it's a lot more art to build to support that distinction vs focusing on doing one area really well, and allowing the team to really go deep on detailing.

Veilguard has higher quality voice acting, better character rendering, more linearity, less satisfying combat, a slightly more intelligible story.
Avowed has a more intricate story with less facile morality, better combat, a far more open world with a lot more value for exploration, better movement system although no idea why they called it parkour, it's just mantling.
