NOT SURE IF A PRODUCT IS VEGAN OR NOT?
Here are some options for you:
1. Read the ingredients label on the package and check to see if there are any ingredients that are on the Food Additives List. https://www.veganeasy.org/food-additives/ Some e-numbers may be derived from animals, such as crushed insects or boiled skin and bones!
2. Use a vegan app to do the checking for you. Apps include:
~ Fussy Vegan, a comprehensive app available in Australia https://www.fussyvegan.com.au/
~ VeganCheck.Me, available internationally https://vegancheck.me/
~ Vegan Pocket App, US based https://veganpocketapp.com/
~ WhatsVegan, scans labels to check if ingredients are vegan https://www.whatsvegan.app/Are there any other apps you'd recommend that we haven't listed?
If you see "May contain traces of…" on the ingredients label of a vegan product this generally means that the product is manufactured on the same production line, or in the same factory as other products which do contain those ingredients – not because it is an ingredient of the product.
The wording is there as a disclaimer in case of accidental contamination from allergens such as crustacea, molluscs, fish, dairy milk, and eggs. The product itself is vegan.
Many vegans are ok with this, but some may prefer to avoid products that could be contaminated with non-vegan allergens. That part is up to you!
