#usb_c multi-port power bricks *could* be great to power *all* small devices with adapters, but in reality they commonly

- don't support 12V output

- disconnect and renegotiate all ports when a device is inserted or removed

- aggressively downgrade port capabilities with multiple devices connected

- have incredibly noisy output

And that's often impossible to find out before purchase.

So USB-C power unfortunately sucks for devices without integrated double conversion UPS (i.e. battery).

Need one mainly for #USB_C <-> C and A<->C

Or are the cheap ones just fine?

(I want to check what all my cables are able to do - current, data bandwidth etc.)

I just noticed an ingenious property of the design of @frameworkcomputer's modules that confused me initially:

Why have these USB-C modules that merely extend the mainboard port when you could just have slots embedded into the frame?

I realised that USB-C ports degrade.
When that happens, the fix is trivially easy: swap in a cheap module in <10 s.

If the ports of the motherboard were exposed directly, you'd need to either re-solder new ports or swap the entire board.

@stiefkind sei froh - ich finde #USB_C einen Alptraum in Sachen Robustheit. Wie beim vorigen Smafo auch beim aktuellen das Problem, dass der Stecker nicht mehr ganz reingehen will. Mit viel Rumwackeln lädt es und mit einem der Kabel lässt sich auch noch eine Datenverbindung hinkitzeln. Die Wärmebildkamera lässt sich aber nicht mehr funktionierend anstecken. Die Anzahl Treffer zu "OnePlus USB-C Buchse tauschen" (DIY Sets und Dienste) zeigt, ich bin wohl nicht der einzige. 😢 🤬

Isn't the whole point of USB C that it's reversible? Yet when I plug my ereader into my PC one way, it doesn't charge or show up as attached. If I flip the connector, it does. Weird.

USB-C can be great when it works, but when you plug a new cable and/or device for the first time, you never know what will happen. Especially when Power Delivery (PD) is involved.For example I have an Anker Power Port Atom III charger, that has a 45W USB-C port and a 15W USB-A port. My Galaxy Tab A7 charges at 15W when plugged to the A port, and 7.5W when plugged to the C port. And my Galaxy Tab A8, does exactly the opposite! 15W when plugged to the C port, 7.5W on the A port 🤷‍♂️
