  2. #UAPA is one of the draconian acts in #India, which is used by the government to target political opponents and dissenting voices, including intellectuals, human rights activists and the like. This chart from #TheHindu today shows 67% of arrested people are still in jails without a trial. Also it shows the conviction rate is so low (3%).
This is a tool used by government to muffle the voices of people questioning its policies.

  3. This is where the Indian police state is today.
Prof. G.N.Saibaba, an English prof at a Delhi college was arrested and detained for
10 years without trial. Indian courts repeatedly denied bail for him, in spite of the fact that he is 90% disabled, bound to a wheel chair and had major health issues. Finally he was given bail a few months back, but is now dead due to health complications. This is an institutional murder under the #BJP's #Modi government and need to be protested.

  5. Unlawful Activities: How the Indian prison system denies basic freedoms, rights and dignity to political prisoners

Even the UAPA prisoners under the full glare and scrutiny of the media were subject to a cavalcade of cruelties, large and small. This ranged from the denial of medical treatment, to the mental and physical cruelties of high-security prison cells, and even to being disallowed from speaking to relatives in their native language. Bhavya Dore and Sukhada Tatke write.

  13. What does the death of a jailed Jesuit priest say about India's democracy under Modi?

Stan Swamy had recently published a study of 3,000 people jailed for being members of banned Maoist groups. He found that 97% of them had no such affiliation and that many of their trials were held without lawyers, in a language they didn't understand. He'd filed a case on their behalf in the state court of Jharkhand, where he lived. All of this had embarrassed the government, he said.
